MPG Decrease

I was recently averaging 22/23 mpg. This includes a combination of Dallas city/highway driving. I just happened to notice that my mpg decreased to 20 mpg. My driving habits haven't changed that I'm aware of. The only thing I can attribute the decrease to is the different brand of gasoline that I used, which was a non-Exxon brand. Can I expect my mpg to increase to what I was averaging before, once I burn this tankful of gasoline? Would it be wise to add some type of additive until this tankful is burned?

There can be many reasons for the decrease in mpg.

I have read that different formulations (mixtures) can cause decrease in mpg. It is more noticeable in the northern states where a different blend is used for the wintertime. I have also read that the percentage of alcohol in the gas mixture can decrease mpg.

Re: MPG Decrease

I usually don't put any additive for my first two years car. I believe the new engine and ECU would do the good job to control the gas/air/valves.

Maybe you should switch back to the old brand, and measure it again.

As Chitown-TL said, there are plenty of reasons which would cost you MPG. If you keep your driving habit intact, the conditions of roads and weather would be factors, too.

How many mileage do you have now? It may add up 5-10 more MPG in the future...

Check your tire pressure. If you don't check it regularly your mileage will start to decrease as your tire looses air.

If you surf on the stop-go city roads and the city you're driving, it seems pretty normal. Mine in the city only has 14-19. Yes, tires pressure could be a reason, too.

I use 39/35...

waymay1305,

This is a bit off-topic, but I noticed you're in the Irving area. I've only noticed 2 other TL's than mine in the area. One was an Anthracite parked in a visitor's parking lot and the other was a green or anthracite I saw drive by on O'Connor in the Las Colinas area. That wouldn't have been you would it?

It may have been. My TL is the Metallic Pearl Green. I'm usually all over the Irving/Las Colinas area. I travel 183 very, very often. Love my car!.
