Mobil 1 + Acura Filter - OK?

I change my oil and filter religiously every 3500 miles
or so via the dealer - ignoring the MID.

After reading the horror stories
of dealers who don't do work (including my own
experiences), I have found a local shop that has been
just great doing a full brake job.

Anyway, they are a full Mobil shop (whatever that
means - not a Mobil station). They said they will
gladly install Mobil 1 (5W20) and use my Acura
filter (2004 and filter ends in -02 Honda part).
This would be my switch over to full synthetic oil
from dino oil. I swear the dealer only puts bulk
10W30 because that's what the receipt says and
they say "don't worry" when I question it.

I know there are probably better oil filters, but for
my consistent low mileage oil changes, will this
filter be OK? I assume so since Acura/Honda would
be out of business if this standard filter was no good.

If you like adding waste oil to the earth that should still be in your engine, then stick with the cheaper dino oil and dont worry at all

If going to extended interval or severe driving- go fully synthetic and go at least the 7500 Acura says you can do on dino oil! PLEASE!!!

The dealer buys dino cheap in bulk and will sell upgrade to synthetic

Your guy has a deal with the local distributor to carry and use all the Mobil products for oil and lube and bearing grease etc, so they get a deal on everything they buy
The honda filter is fine, or Mobil1 or K&N

I would go with the Mobil 1 filter as well - M1-104. As for adding waste oil to the earth, that doesn't happen if you turn your used oil into a reclamation center. The used oil gets re-refined and used ways such as lubricants and greases, and fuel oil for furnaces. So it gets another life, so to speak.

Balances Out

As far as adding to polution goes, I am certain that for every nut that
changes their oil every 3500 miles, there is another on the road that totally
ignores theirs. So it balances out.

Does anybody serious thing the MID is nothing more than a high tech
idiot light designed to make the dealer money and sell more cars? I
like to think I proactively maintain my car - go figure?

And funny thing, when I go to the dealer and ask for an O&F change and
tell them I have 3500 miles since the last one - the dealer NEVER says I don't need it.
And sometimes they actually change the oil (I think) !

I don't believe any dealer would turn away business, even if you changed the oil at 1,000 miles. It sure can't do any harm to change oil/filter at 3,500 mile intervals, but is it of any benefit.
Having said that, years ago the old school mentality was 3,000 miles, to which I always abided. Over the years I've migrated to 5,000 miles, always dino oil, and have had vehicles well over 200,000 miles with no oil related problems. As I just purchased the used TL in May, I thought I'd check to see how many miles before the indicator is at 15%. It's now reading 5,960 at 30%. Sort of unsettling, but will wait it out then make a decision as to future changes.

I've read many posts on TL owner's oil theories, and find that they all firmly believe in what they say and use to be the best.
So to recap:
Use Synthetic or Dino oil as both touted on this site.
As we know 5-20 is the recommended viscosity, but the following have been used and suggested for use:
5-20
0-20
0-30
10-20
5-30
10-30
5-50

So go ahead and use the Mobil 1 synthetic and the Honda filter, I'm certain you'll not encounter any problems.

Removing good oil from the engine and then expending the energy to transport and recycle it- when it was still perfectly good engine oil--thats waste!

get an analysis from www.blackstone-labs.com and learn whats what with your oil and how many miles it can go
