Mobil 1 - 5W-20 - Hard to get?
I just took a trip to WalMart yesterday in an attempt to get some Mobil 1 - 5W-20 and apparently they said they were sold out.. I asked them when they stocked it.. They said "yesterday"...
I guess either one of the following is true:
1. They only got a small (very small) shipment of the oil... I then asked them if they had any in the back or in the lube center.. They checked and said "no."
2. They never got a shipment for it. (In other words, they were BS'ing)
3. Someone or a few customers snapped up all of them in ONE day. (And chances are, its someone on this forum.. haha jk :P)
Besides WalMart, where else could I find this syn oil with a very high probability? I live in the South Bay Area (San Jose), so bonus points to locations close to where I am. (If the suggested place also stocks PureOne or Mobil M1-110 oil filters, even better!)
I also saw http://www.pennzoil.com/products/mot.../platinum.html available.. Is this any good?
I got about 4800 miles and I'm due soon for my A1 service, so I want to make the switch to synthetic.
Thanks!

The nearest Sam's Club is in the 916 (100 miles or so), 707 (70 miles or so), and 925 area codes (80 miles or so).. A bit too far for me... Thanks anyway!

Order some Amsoil XL 5w-20 for around $4.80/quart shipped, by the case at preferred pricing. The excellent oil analysis report that I recently posted showed how well Amsoil XL 5w-20 works in the 3.2L V-6.
Pennzoil Platinum is a good, EOP derived oil, but I don't have any analysis reports with it yet.

HAHAH, I almost knew for certain you were from an area like CA that uses area codes to designtate areas... hehe.... b/c in the rest of the country, an area code is like.... hundreds and hundreds of square miles.... or even whole states... Kansas has 3, Montana and a few other stats have only ONE! anyhow, i just thought it was funny that you menetioned areas by area codes, and i said to myself... what, is he in CA? and sure enough, you were

Havoline dino...NOT syn, is what RR WAS using. He is currently running LE 8130 10w-30/LC, yes with the LC I suggested for a 5K run, then he'll pull a sample.

Do you know of any places that I can easily get Havoline 5W-20 dino? WalMart doesn't seem to have it..
I'll also be looking for the best oil filter when I do the oil change, so I guess it'd be nice if I could find the oil and the filter preferably all in one place...
I guess I really should be using dino for <10k miles since its not recommended to do extended drains prior, which thus would defeat the purpose of the premium syn oils out there...
Thanks!

Actually, I was just as Walmart a few days ago, looking for the 5-quart jugs of Havoline 5w-20 with no luck; guess your Walmart is just as lame as mine.
I completely overlooked the fact that you only had 4800 miles, in that case, I'd simply use dino for a short 5000 mi interval before switching to syn at 10K.
Pennzoil is also a good product, it was only $7.97 for a 5-quart jug. It is an excellent oil, just slightly more expensive but easier to obtain. At the same time, pick up a Supertech ST7317 Oil Filter, they work quite well for the shorter 3-5K drains, and it only costs $2.07.
After making this post, I'm about to write a thread on the importance of frequent ATF changes. While you're at Walmart, pick-up 3 quarts of Valvoline Maxlife ATF for $2.86/quart, and change out the ATF. This will remove approximately 40.5% of the fluid in the system, continue to do a 3 quart fluid change every 10,000 miles. Valvoline Maxlife ATF is just as good as the Pennzoil Multi-Vehicle I've recommended, but MUCH easier to obtain as people have complained to me that they've had difficulty locating the Pennzoil Multi-Vehicle ATF I've recommended. Valvoline recommends their fluid for use in the Honda Z-1 app, and warranties any fluid related failure caused by their product. The label on the back of the bottle lists Honda Z-1 compatibility.

Would a PureOne or Mobil 1 oil filter work just as well with the Pennzoil dino for a short 3-5k run?
Yes, I'll also look into the ATF... Change it out during the same time as my 2nd oil change (probably a tad under 10k miles)
Thanks!

TLTrance, dunno about the Valvoline. Haven't seen many UOAs from it.
BTW, consider using Schaeffer's in place of Mobil 1 once you're ready for longer drains. It performs better than Mobil 1, in my experience, due to its slightly better solvency and its chemistry.
Even though its a blend and costs about 3/4 the amount of Mobil 1, it performs well enough to justify its price.

What about Castrol Syntec in 5W-20, any ideas on that from the experts?
They are first fill in a few cars, but of course that means lowest bidder probably.

I guess I'll check out Costco next time to see what their oil offerings are.. Probably cheaper there too.. Of course I'm going synthetic after 10K, so price will be more of an issue at that point.

Costco in Foster City? Yeah I think theres one there. Don't remember for sure.
Don't think too hard about oil.
Major brand 5w-20 will do fine. I think the real value oil on the market now, if you can find it, is Trop Artic 5w-20. It uses the same technology as Motorcraft 5w-20, and its been spotted occassionally at Walmart for less than $1.50/qt.

need for speed,
On what car is Castrol 5w-20 Syntec factory fill? As far as the oil goes, it doesn't really stand out for a Grp III, esp its price.
But its decent, though overpriced.

I just picked up some Pennzoil 5w-20 dino at Pepboys.. Kinda pricy (didn't want to buy the 6-gallon in a bag) at $2.39/quart. I should've gone to Walmart instead.
I guess the next fill I will switch to syn, which means I should start my search for Mobil 1 or Amsoil, although since I'm not an oil nut, the former will do just fine.
I also picked up a Purolator PureOne PL14610 and a Mobil M1-110 yesterday. I'll use the PureOne this time, and then save the M1-110 for when I switch to syn.
