Mirrors in reverse

So after almost a year of having my car, I finally found out that the mirrors move down when its in reverse. But only 1 side works? Was happy but sad at the same time

mine don't go down cause I keep the switch in the middle. i think?

maybe you've always kept your switch in the middle and thats why you didn't notice it..cause it wasnt doing it.

I thought it was just the passenger side that went down

The idea is that you use it for parallel parking and so you flip the switch to the side closer to the curb to have that mirror tilt down to help you see the curb. (Remember that on one-way streets there's often parallel parking on both sides facing the same way, such that your driver's door might be closer to the curb.) Because only one side of the car is close to the curb, the idea is that you only need the tiltdown on the one side at any given time. Having the other mirror not tilted should, in theory, help you see how close you are to the bumper of the car behind you, should you need that info—if both mirrors tilted, you wouldn't be able to see that bumper.

I use the passenger-side tiltdown to help me see the edge of the driveway when I back out of the garage because one of the bushes is a little close to the driveway and I don't want to run over it.

I see. It just seemed like every car has both mirrors. Both would be useful in reverse parking but I guess it really isnt necessary.

Yea I like this feature a lot. It helped me greatly so many times. The only thing is that if you are parking somewhere and it's really dark outside, you can't see the side of the car.

Maybe there should be like a puddle light when you throw it in reverse and tilt mirror is selected.

Well, I suppose there's a difference between parallel parking and "reverse parking." "Reverse parking" could be construed as referring to the odious people who hold up the whole line of traffic in the car park while they go back and forth in an attempt to back into a regular parking space (i.e., a space marked with lines, as opposed to a parallel spot) instead of just pulling in normally. In the case of backing into a space, you're right, there's a need to know where you are in relation to the lines on either side of the space, as well as the cars on either side of you (i.e., if one of them parked crooked, you may have to as well). With parallel parking that's less of an issue because generally the goal is, as LasVegasTL said, to get as close to the curb as possible without touching it—although I suppose in some places, where you're on a hill, legally you need to curb your front wheels such that the tyre touches the curb (in San Francisco you WILL be ticketed if you fail to do this), and I suppose the distance from the curb is generally governed by statute (many states say it's illegal to be more than 12 inches from the curb, though such laws probably aren't widely enforced).

BTW, regarding "every car has both mirrors"—I suppose nowadays every new car has two sideview mirrors, but that certainly wasn't always the case. My first two cars had just the driver's-side mirror. One of my brother's cars has just the one mirror. It's funny, the times I've found the passenger-side mirror to be the most useful while driving have been when I've driven right-hand drive cars in the United Kingdom. Since you drive on the left there, the bulk of the car is to your left, and I found that it helped me initially to have the passenger-side mirror (which is on the left there) adjusted downward to help me maintain a sense for where the edge of the road was, given that I was used to having the bulk of the car to my right. It quickly became natural to drive on the other side, though.

I remember my Honda Accord I owned in Japan, it had wing or fender mirrors. They were way out in front of you and easier to view, since you didn't have to look all the way to the right or left. Those were fun days driving on the left side of the road.

My driver side one is weird. It'll go down for reverse but when going into park or drive it moves sky high. Doesn't go back to it's original programmed position.

This feature is definitely handy in tight spots. Add this with a back-up reverse camera and you're set!

Have you tried turning on the mirror heater to see if it might help melt that? The button is just to the left of the switch you use to select the left or right mirror.

Oh my god!!

Thank you for this thread!! I've been trying to figure out for that last 2 weeks since I picked up my 08 TL-Type S why my mirrors didnt tilt down in reverse like my 02 3.2 TL did. One day my left one started tilting when I was in reverse, and I had no idea why this started happening - it was the right one in my 02. NOW I KNOW!! It happened after I had adjusted the driver's side mirror manually and left the switch in the left position!!

Again thank you for allowing me to regain some sanity!!

Did you get an owner's manual? If yes, that's one of the useful features that's in it.
If not, sign up on http://owners.acura.com/ and you will get on-line access to the owner's and navigation manuals, which will describe all sorts of features you might find useful.

Congrats on the car and welcome to AZ!

OP-if you want both to tilt at the same time, KP-Technologies makes the "Deluxe" module to allow you to do this. Link is below, it is $99 before install, of course. I do not have it, just a heads up.....
