Miles until empty calc
Miles until empty calc
Filled up my TL tonight. Display was telling me 20 miles until empty. I thought that this calc was telling me how many miles until there was only the 3 gallon reserve left. However, the tank took 14.295 gallons, so I was into the 3 gallon reserve already.
There have been a couple other threads on this. The upshot is that the miles to empty is very conservative. My best guess, based on my experience and reading the past threads, is that your observation of 14.295 gallons is just about the point at which everyone's reads zero.
I now assume that 0 miles to go means that I have (conservatively) 2.5 gallons; I multiply that by the mpg listing calculated by the "trip computer" and set an upper limit ... usually about 50 miles, and absolutely no more than 60.
Generally I find that I have a range between 400 and 410 miles per tank--slightly more if I am averaging 25 mpg or higher.

Thank you rets. Here's the info
This is from a very long thread I started about fuel tank capacities, etc. and is based on actual and precise testing
a. When the low fuel warning light comes on, you still have about 3.71 gallons left in the tank (94 miles divided by 25.3 mpg)
b. When miles to empty reads zero, that is time to fill up, but you still have about 2 gallons left in the tank (57 miles divided by 25.3 mpg)
c. When filling the tank, if you stop at the first shutoff, you will have about 17 gallons in the tank.

But since I got caught with only a few gallons left in my Accord's tank many miles from home last August when the blackout of 2003 hit with no working gas station pumps as a result, I've gotten into the habit of filling up shortly after I get down to a ½. The way things are now with gas prices, potential terrorism, etc., ya never know.

I was lucky to have more than half of tank on that day. Who knows what's gonna happen! If I can, I usually fill up my tank right before "low fuel warning", it's about 10-13 gallons.

But anyways... I always wondered why the TL's trip computer doesn't have a "Fuel Consumed" reading like my other car does. I found that to always pretty much be spot on +/- 0.5 gallons with whatever the pump at the station says. Plus I learned real quick what reading means I'm running on fumes....
