Manual swap
Manual swap
Id like to take my 2007 acura tl type s auto 5at and swap a 6mt into it. I know it's expensive and requires extra parts, but I wanted to know how much exactly it would be and what parts I would need
From what I read on other threads its like $4.5K, but also requires a lot of additional parts other than just clutch, transmission, and ECU. (engine and instrument panel, wiring harness, engine mount brackets, the list continues. It would be easier to buy a 6sp TL-S than swap if you didn't have a spare TL-S sitting with all the parts. I'm still getting used to driving an automatic...
OP, I tried to explore this route about 3 years ago. I don't recall if I saved any of my research(it's on my old computer). This swap is not as easy as swapping a manual into an 04-06 TL.
The parts list goes way beyond clutch, mounts, harness, ecu, and common parts. I offered to buy all the parts(OEM) through my local Acura dealer and pay them the labor to install everything. They refused on the grounds that they don't support altering a car from it's OEM specifications.
I abandoned this project when the cost walked past the $10k mark and kept on climbing. The gains are not cost effective unfortunately.

Its pretty easy actually
1) Sell A/T Type S
2) Purchase Manual Type S
This probably seems like a bit of hassle, but the costs would be substantially lower and you;d avoid the possibility of possible shoddy craftsmanship. It might be tougher if you're looking for a rare color or a certain condition, but im a 6mt is what you want, this is the way to go.

Interesting discussion; I'm currently in the market for a 2004-2006 Acura TL 6-Speed to replace my aging 2001 Accord V6, and on the Accord forums when someone says, "I want to put a 6-Speed into my V6 Accord," everybody gets pissed at me when I say it is better/faster/cheaper to sell the car and buy something else with a manual gearbox. Looks like you Acura TL folks actually get it.
I've seen this discussion here and there when looking up random TL stuff. Its not recommended from most people that I see reply on this topic. Now if it was a ek civic or any other honda it would of been easy and a lot of information on that but for these acuras it seem as a no go for trying to swap from auto to 6mt.
I would sell that one and try getting a type s manual or go for your next wanted/dream car.

it's cuz the car still isnt that cheap yet.
once the value of the car hits $2-3k, you'll see a lot more innovation and part swapping.
@ $4-6K and as high as $8k, there's no way one would chop up this car...yet, still cheap enough to just buy a 6 speed in the first place

I think threads like this pop up about once a year....and most get shot down. Pretty sure there were a few that completed the swap...I remember a few threads with cars that were half done, or maybe done, but never quite right. Enough people have expressed the opinion of don't do it...it is your car, your time, and your money. Do what you want. Basically this will not be an easy task, but it sounds like the OP knew it going into it. He has found a donor car apparently which is a huge step. Just be aware there won't be much "useful" info in here since few have done it. And even those that have...quite possibly aren't around here anymore.
Good luck and post lots of pics and info. It will be interesting to watch if you are able to pull it off.
