Maintenance Schedule
Maintenance Schedule
I recently had maintenance service "B2" done on my 04 TL after passing 24,000 miles. I paid over $200 for this. Previously my routine services only cost $30-$60 for oil changes and other small items. Now the service rep is telling me that at 30K I'm looking at spending $600 on scheduled maintenance. What am I looking at spending at 60 and 90K miles?
Did I buy a car that has incrementally more expensive maintenance requirements? Am I better off getting the maintenance done somewhere else? I thought this car was supposed to be easy on the pocketbook!

I had my B2 done and it cost $70 and change. Ask the service rep to give you specific details and then show him your manual. I think the most expensive one would be A/B4 which would include A/B service items and (sub item 4) replace timing belt/ plugs, inspect valve clearance and water pump. Cost on that one is approx $1100 (according to my dealer). Your dealer should be using the maintenance minder schedule and not mileage. BTW, I do agree with getting a 2nd opinion from another dealer.

Hawhyen51: The B4 is not due until 105,000 miles. It cost me around $500 to replace the timing belt AND water pump (once you have the front cover off you might as well replace the water pump) and all hoses, but the 1G had a longitudinal engine, while ours is transverse so it may be harder to get at the front cover. The plugs run around $100 a set, + labor, so maybe $1,100 is a little high but not outrageous.
You won't need it for a long time, under normal driving situations, but when you, or anyone else, needs it done, shop around for a better price.
Ron, I was just using it as a reference in comparison to the $600 30k maintenance quoted to gmred. I think that quote is way out there if you're following the MID schedule, don't you think? Or am I kidding myself?

That said, even if there was such a thing the price is outrageous. There is no maintenance schedule recommended by the MID that ought to cost more than a couple of hundred dollars.
The 2 subitem, which is air filter and dust and pollen filter, might cost that much counting parts and labor, but anyone can change his own air filter for around $25 for parts, so the dust and pollen filter, which is a little harder and you may not want to do it yourself, should only cost $100 tops.
The 3 subitem, replace transmission fluid, only requires 3 quarts of fluid plus labor, so that might be $60-100 depending on where you live.
One of the major features advertised for the TL is No Major Maintenance for 105,000 miles, which is plugs, timing belt (and water pump since you are there anyway) and checking valve clearance.
The minor maintenance is checking fluid levels and looking for leaks, loose suspension parts, etc. This should be done during the oil change but you might expect a small charge for checking the suspension, but nothing major.
I try to stay away from discussions like this because I get mad as hell to hear people being charged $150 for a B1 service, most of which should be done as inspection items with the oil change, so you should only be paying for the oil change ($30) and the tire rotation ($30), $75 tops if your dealer is a crook.
