Maintaining 6-Speed Manual reliability

So far at 29,000 miles, my 04’s transmission has been great. The dealer changed the fluid at 10,000 miles and wants to do it again as part of the 30,000 mile service.

They want almost $500 to change out all the fluids which I think is way too high. Fore that reason I’m going to attempt to do my own service. But I’m hesitant to change the transmission fluid because it’s running so smoothly.

I intend on using Honda coolant and brake fluid and Mobile 1 or equivalent oil. I would appreciate your input on this.

Manual transmission fluid replacement is within the reach of most backyard mechanics. For manuals, the initial service is most important as the first change usually removes a lot of metal shavings.

Is the TL's manual transmission more reliable than automatics?

Unless something is inherently wrong with car model's manual transmission (design, manufacture, etc.), all manuals are more reliable, simpler to maintain, easier to service, and last longer than automatics.

Seems to have some grinding issues that an aftermarket fluid has been able to solve.

Changing the manual transmission fluid in the TL is the easiest and least messy one I've ever done. And it take about 1 hour to 1 1/4 hours if you take your time and do it right. They could not have made it easier.

As for the fluid recommendations, there are three that are at the top: GM Synchromesh Friction Modified, Amsoil Manual Synchromesh Fluid, and the new Honda manual transmission Friction Modified fluid.

Here's two links you might find very helpful.

Can you tell me what the fluid's name is? My transmission doesn’t have any issues but it doesn't hurt to know what products are available.

it's a general motors fluid known as synchromesh manual transmission fluid. i work in the parts department at a general motors dealership and got a killer deal on three quarts of it (car takes almost 2.5 quarts). other than that, honda makes a synthetic manual tranny fluid now as well. going with the honda stuff won't void your warranty.

to all MT owners, get an aluminum shift knob. its the best thing i've done to my transmission yet. buy a quality one around $80, trust me you will notice a huge difference in shifting!
