Made an offer tonight

Well... I finally convinced myself not to get a 350Z or G35 Coupe, and get a TL instead... I guess I went to sleep a 24yrold and woke up a 30yrold... but anyhow...

I made an offer tonight for an '05 6spd, with Nav (all season tires). I offered 33,500 including destination charge. He said 34,000 was the best they could do... I didn’t like the fact that he said 34, then after I offered 33,250, he still said 34,000. I said... okay, 33,500 is the most I'll do... he stayed at his 34,000...

I saw "wallaceoh" got an 05 with nav AT for 33,335, so I thought they should be able to come down to 33,500. But he still said 34... so i said... ok, well... I think I'll consider going down to Dallas (about 5 hours away) where they are higher volume and don't need as much profit on each car. He actually agreed and said that's exactly it, that they are not a high volume dealer so they can't take as little profit... but they'd still get their ~$1000 holdback after they sold it... so i think 33,500 was a fair offer and would get them over 2K dealer profit, and then the sales guy probably would have still made $200-$300. (all these prices I've said included dest charge).

A few minutes ago i thought... well... maybe I'll do it for $34,000 IF they give me a spoiler (and install it)! I am gonna wait and see if he calls back tomorrow... if not, later tomorrow I'll go bring that idea up to him... Anyone know the msrp/invoice of a spoiler through acura?? I'd just rather let them do it and not have to fool with it...

Welcome to the board. I feel both of your offers are/would be fair.

Good luck!

Good luck getting less than $34K in Texas. You may be able to do it. I've been talking to just about every dealer in Houston and Austin/SA the last couple of weeks trying to get a '05/AT/Navi. The best price I could get was $34K.

Since I know they can do better I'm going to wait until January when they'll be hurting for the after-Christmas dollar.

You should get better deals during the last two weeks of december. If you are able to wait do so.

MP3,

You are using your best tool well -- the walk away.
Hang tough and take your time (as much as you can). Best of luck!

If the dealer makes 2grand the salesman makes about 500-600.

Is this an 05 you are getting?

I think 34K with a spoiler is cheaper than paying 33,500.........

Goodluck and $500bucks your not far from driving a TL away. If he can't go lower, I would tell him to throw something in. Let us know how you do but I can pretty much bet you will soon to drive away your brand new TL home!!!! I still remember the excitement and fun when I went to Acura to pick up the TL. All and all I think $34000.00 including freight PDI is a pretty good price but $33500.00 obviously will be a bit better.

anyone know the msrp/invoice of a spoiler? I figured msrp would be around 400-500, which is why I figured I would maybe ask for that if I pay 34k... if they can't do that... then I'll try to see what he can do...

Stick to your price, they can do that price if they want to.

Btw, did you actually test drive a G35 sedan and/or coupe?

I test drove the 350Z (obviously it's not a G35 coupe) about 3 times... I did not test drive a G35 sedan when I went looking for the TL, but, I have had acuras/hondas in the past, I just was sold on the TL... maybe it was an ignorant decision not to test drive the G35 sedan... but it would have been more than i wanted to spend to equip it like the TL. One main thing i like about the new G35... they play MP3 cds... but... if I want, I can figure out a way i know many people already have figured out ways... but check out some of my projects in the past...
i was in mobile entertainment a while back for one of the projects...

how commission works

Just thought I would throw in how commissions work for auto salesman. Different dealers have different structures on salesman's commission, so I can only talk about my particular dealership.

Dealers have PAC, which is a certain amount of money held back by the dealer that he does not pay commission on. At my dealership, the PAC on a TL is $1000. That means if the gross profit on the deal (not including holdback) is $2000, then you get 30 percent of $1000, or $300. If it is less than $1500, then you are paid a minimum commsision of $150. Salesman are never paid commission on holdback or on the D&H fees. The 30 percent my dealership pays is high in the industry, but so are the PACs.

So, if you get a deal on a car for $500 over invoice, the salesman will be making a minimum commission.

Yes, the dealer gets holdback, but that is to help offset the interest cost of flooring and facilities expense.

I hope this is helpful to those of you negotiating your car deals in how it related to the salesperson's paycheck, rather than the overall dealer profit.

Best Regards,

Erik

I second all your statements... the only difference is I have read (i think on edmunds) that holdback for acura is 3% of base MSRP, not a flat 1000... in the case of 34,800, it does work out to be right around 1000 at $1044. This salesman went ahead and said that he gets 20% usually, sometimes a little higher.

20% would be pretty nice on some of the other vehicles this dealership sells... porsche, mercedes, lexus and jaguar... he said they are getting a mercedes SLR in a few weeks!!
