Lower MPG with A/C off vs climate control on automatic

I was cruising down on the 210 today and decided to turn off automatic climate control and set fan speed to 2 and temperature to 75f. Weird thing is that when I checked the MID trip computer, it read an avg MPG of 24 even after a trip computer reset. A few minutes later, I thought to myself, it cant possibly be this low because I've had instances where ive even hit 34-36 mpg on the freeway. So I turned on climate control and set it to automatic and set the temperature to 75 and my MPG began to slightly increase from 24 to 26. Hrm....

I reset the MID again and the trip computer started reading 32mpg. Interesting..

Anyone else encounter this?

I just keep tapping the A/C button which will go from a/c on to a/c off.

There are too many variables. Chances are you encountered a grade too small to notice or a slight head wind with the AC off. If you rolled the windows down when you shut the AC off you will see a decrease in mpg at freeway speeds.

My 07 Type S is ALWAYS left on auto and I keep the temp at either 69 or 70. Whatever the gas mileage is I dont care. I mean come on my car before the Type S was an 08 Grand Cherokee SRT8. Thing was a BEAST but damn was it thirsty :-)

haha..i am sortof a granny at the pedal :-P

I will slowly accelerate from a stop and will ease off the gas as I approach a red light and will even just let it coast when I see a red light ahead.

I got 37 MPG earlyer this week and was going to post a new thread for this, guess they beat me to it. It was a 10 mile trip with an average speed of about 57MPH IT WAS CRAZY! I've never had that happen before, the best I've gotten was like 32 and i was tailgating an SUV to catch the draft lol

Not possible without going downhill and with a tailwind! Did you base this off what your car was saying? Try getting that fuel economy going the opposite direction ;-)

The new EPA ratings took effect based on teh fact the old results were with optimal conditions. The new ratings take into effect things like the A/C. SO your findings are what the EPA long knew.

the computer's reported average mpg is very dependent on when you reset it. when I first got the car I reset it while I was doing about 60mph on a downhill. Wow! I was getting 65mpg! Sweet!

Hey, it fooled my passenger

I use both the MID and Instant average (hacked NAVI) numbers to get a basic idea of what my true mileage is. I hate math, so I never try to figure this out the real way!

Anyway, I have an 06 AT, 47K, Pirelli PZero on stockies (38F/35R). I Seafoamed per the DIY in the 3G Garage during the summer. I drive a mix of highway/city with a one way commute of ~35 miles.

On the highway, I have gotten up to 33-34mpg per the Instant MPG on a 150 mile trip. However, with 3000+ miles on the MID, my average shows 24mpg while the Instant screen shows 25-26. I figure that is close to the actual figure I am getting. I'm happy with it.

I use actual gallons of fuel consumed (full tank to full tank) and divide that by miles travelled. the MID is a joke.

but driving cruise control at 70mph I am able to get 34mpg (95% highway)
