Locating a replacement starter for a '07/'08 6MT Type-S

So far, I'm having no luck finding a replacement starter for my 07 6MT type-s. I did some searching and it sounds like the majority of folks suggest avoiding going with an aftermarket starter from Advanced Auto or Autozone. Do ya'll have any tips on where I can find a starter for my vehicle?

It's kind of early for an 07/08 starter to go out, but not unheard of. Are you sure it's the starter?

I'm not sure where you are hearing that A-M starters are a bad choice....

Here's a link to a new starter, non-OEM:

STARTER 07 08 ACURA TL 3.2L 3.5L 31200-RDA-A01 31200-RDA-A02 MHG028 31200-RDA-A01 31200-RDA-A02 - Newegg.com

My car has close to 120,000 miles on it now, and it's a manual so it has been used a lot more than an automatic starter in its lifetime.

With that said, the manual type-s starter is different from the automatic tl, manual tl, and automatic tl type-s starters. So I don't think that the one that you linked will work. Thank you for looking though.

Any issue with simply buying an OEM starter online? Can be had for around $300.
Or maybe you can fix yours? If you know what's failing on it, then you can rebuild it or sometimes simply cleaning it is good.

Either way, full starter PN: 31200-RDB-A01

Check out the UA6 service manual for starter rebuilds. Most of this stuff is made to sound much more complicated than it is. Visual inspection and cleanup should tell you what's the issue usually.

Huh?

And if nothing is wrong with it, I wouldn't worry about it. I have 170K+ miles on my 04 6MT starter and it's still going strong.

Also if you decide to go the rebuild route, most often then not you need to clean the armature + housing, oil it a bit and buy new brushes worth under 10$... just so you know how cost effective it is.

I don't let my car sit and idle as much as I would if I had an automatic. Therefore I start the car more often then I would if I had an automatic. I'm sure a lot of people can relate.

There is something wrong with it. I'm not just replacing it to replace it lol. I have had to resort to tapping it with a breaker a bar a few times to get my car to start.

If you bang on it with something and it starts then it's most likely the brushes that need replacing because they're too short now. And while at it, you can clean the armature.

Good luck, although luck is hardly needed, starter motors are pretty easy to service. People selling refurb ones make a pretty penny most of the time.

I still don't understand why you would start it more because its a manual. What does it being a manual have anything to do with it?

Because as a manual, I turn my car off more often then I would if I had an automatic! It's easier to just turn the car off with it in gear rather than put it in neutral and put the parking brake on.

If I had an automatic, I would just put it in park and run in to wherever I am going without turning the car off for those short stops.

Does that make sense?

the only time i did that is when my parking brake wasnt adjusted correctly, so the car rolled back when idling. I had to put it in first, and shut the car off, if I just wanted to wait in my car. this def. took LONGER than just idling.

the justification of it's easier doesnt make sense, because its def. easier to pull the parking brake while you idle.

So, is your parking brake adjusted correctly?

No

So locating these internal components for this starter is just as difficult as finding a starter itself.

Acura Parts @ AcuraOEMparts.com - Genuine Acura OEM Parts from Delray Acura

There is the starter itself along with the internal components, but no brushes. Unless the armature includes the brushes?

Here's what it shows for the starter part numbers:

001 06312-RDB-515RM STARTER, CORE ID (SM-44248) (06312-RDB-515) (RMD)

I take it that the RM/(RMD) means remanufactured?

The brushes aren't Acura/Honda exclusive or anything. You need to know the starter motor brand, usually starter motors have writing on them to tell you what brand and model they are (Mitsuba in this case) and model (SM-44246, have to double check yourself for that)

Good luck. :-)

Mine crapped out a few months ago, but I was able to get an OEM one right before the price hike, so I lucked out.
