Real dyno HP is about the same but the Z is much lighter and easier to launch.
Auto to auto is close but I would put my $ on the Z.

Alright... I have a '01 330i and to clarify some things:
1. The 0-60 in 6.1 secs on the 330i is for the manual with a pro behind the wheel - I never liked the manual time trials car makers give as 90% of the peeps out there can not switch gears like a pro (you may THINK you can but trust me you CANT)
2. The "numbers" on 330i and TL are within a 10th of a second of each other from 0-60 in an automatic (6.8/6.7 secs)
3. The 330i has 230ish HP (I forgot if its 220 or 235 hp) while TL has 270 hp (Score one for TL)
4. The 330i reaches peak torque around 3500 rpm while TL is much higher (think it was 5000 rpm)(Score one for 330i)
5. Not sure the 330i is a "heavier" car.......
OK now to the part you really care about:
"someone" was at a light with about a mile of straightaway ahead of them with no cross streets and no traffic on a divided road in a 330i with a TL next to them..... the 330i was faster off the start and both cars hit 60 with inches of difference (the "someone in 330i slowed down while the TL kept accelerating)- results:
A. off a standing start both are really about even from 0-60
B. the "someone" in the 330i values his life and figured 60 on a 50 is enough
C. The "someone" in the 330i saw the cop first (ok ok there werent any but that sounds better then 60 on a 50 was enough)
Ill wager off a 30 MPH start the TL would have the slight edge - makes sense as it does have more HP and at 30MPH the revs on TL can be kept where torque is usefull
Ill wager the 330i has the edge (even if slight) in the darn ole twisty's not only due to the rear wheel drive but the better weight balance (its almost 50/50 and sport suspension is STIFF believe you me)
BOTTOM LINE: I think if you grab a stock 330i auto and a TL auto that both cars will have a hell of a time leaving either in the dust - for most of us drivers who arent pro's enough to squeeze every nickle and dime worth of HP and torque out of the cars they perform nearly identical - Any "330i" who thinks they can flat out beat the TL better hope the road is nothing but switchbacks and any TL that thinks they can flat out beat the 330i better hope its a flat road with an unlimited speed limit - for the rest of us on normal roads the cars are pretty even
I know I know you dont want it said but I hope nobody thinks Im promoting racing by this post - on the other hand I hope you all realize the cars are so even its not worth risking yer life or that of others trying to show off
I do have to admit that I thought BMW drivers have the Ultimate AHole Machine market cornered but after seeing some of the 04 TL drivers out there I think the Ultimate AHole Club just got bigger -
Yes I admit 99% of the BMW drivers out there are jerks - us 1% got tired of putting up with them and decided if we couldnt beat them might as well join them.... :shit:

Mosoco - Ah, the zero to sixty for the TL is 5.7 (manual) and 6.2 (automatic) so answer is... auto to auto or manual to manual, the TL wins. Oh and from another ex-Beemer to another... Welcome to the dark side!

if what you say is true then the guy driving the TL sucked :-) cus "someone" kept up with him rather well..... and I havent gone to the dark side yet - I still got my 01 330i - will prob wait till next year when 05 are out and bugs worked out on first year run... so for now from one beemer to an ex-Beemer: :fingerfawk: traitor!!!!
you know now that Acura has upped the ante I suspect BMW new 3 series will start porting some of the M3's HP back into the 325 and 330 to bump up the performance.. if they dont they will loose the throne Im sure of it -

fake hp numbers and great gearing
Those bimmers are really just under rating their horsepower and with their agressive gearing it makes their car really fast off the line. The tl may have 270hp on paper and the 330i with 225hp it looks like the tl should smoke it but after test driving my 6mt tl and the bimmer the 330i felt faster to about 45to50mph then the tl catches up at higher speeds. Also horsepower means shit a E36 M3 with just 240hp will smoke my 6mt tl but a tl is better priced.

Supreme Underlord/Abyss
I forgot one.
I beat a Delorean.
I dunno what happened. He just disappeared when he hit 88 MPH, and left twin streaks of flames on the street.

Not a Blowhole
Generally, high HP is an indicator of top speed capability, while high torque lower down is a better indicator of the car's ability to accelerate. The M3 makes up for a relatively low torque rating by good gearing and lots of RPM, similar to the S2000 - it can do a high rate of work, even without a lot of twist. That is why saying "torque is more important" or "HP rules" is problematic - one has to look at the total rate of work capability. Low torque with two gears will make for a slow vehicle to 100, compared to higher torque with less HP in the same race.
This translates to the same philosophy in the E55 AMG vs. M5 battles. The Merc uses a monster supercharged V8 in a heavier car with an automatic; the M5 is NA, and has a manual tranny that makes good use of the peakier, lower torque engine. Personally, I like a car with massive torque, as it is effortless, and one does not have to thrash it so hard to get it to trot - but I also like the pleasure of a perfect 2-3 shift just at fuel cutoff (8200) in the S2K, and the attendant sound of the engine through the Mugen exhaust. Only thing better was the sound at redline of the NSX. Pure heaven.
On the street, alternating between the TL, the Cobra, and the S2000 is a trip. One is one extreme (massive torque and HP in a heavy car), one is the other (lower torque, good HP, excellent gearsing and low weight), and the TL is in between. It is tricky mastering the two with sticks - the TL I can just stomp on.

I had the Dinan stage 2 performance software and cold air intake installed on my wife's Z3 two weeks ago. Makes a nice difference. The G-Tech Pro Comp shows about a 0.4 second decrease in 0-60 times and the car makes a wicked snarl in the mid-to-high RPM range.
Anyway, this is a TL forum and a TL racer-oriented thread, so back to that. Just wanted to make sure Dinan was properly represented here.

Rolled up on a S2000 at a light just before I-75 here in S. FL. He was krepping onto the on-ramp so I blew past and around him in about 500-700 feet of merge lane. I saw in my rearview him mouth "Holly s***!" He caught up about a 1/4 on 75 North, pulled along side with his window down and asked if my "family sedan could hang". Long story short, I pulled off and away and never saw that yellow S2000 again. Maybe he got scared of the weaves through traffic or was just checking out the TL's lines. Not a 1/4 mile and I'm a 30 year old Dad. I've owned an NSX (and am looking for another) but this TL just begs to be pushed.
Others in this TL's short 1 week life:
2000 Mustang (Not sure if auto or manual)
A lot of half way hooked up Civics w/loud exhausts (pick a year)
'03 RSX
