Lifespan of a TL
My car has 130k miles bought it last year at 60k and still owe freaking 16k for it. and yes im pissed off seeing the market for a TL is somewhere near 14 or 15k with decent low miles. and mine is 130k and still owe near 17k lol but anways how long do you think The TL motor would last. I dont dog out my car everyday change oil every 4k miles and had my waterpump and timing belt change already

My previous car was a 1998 3.2TL and when I sold it to buy my wife's '09 Pilot Touring, i had well over 180K miles on it. The engine was running like a champ and all i did was the regular maintenance. I only use Mobil 1 0W-30 and changed it every 4500 miles. If you take care of it, it should last to 200K no problem.
I currently drive a 2005 TL with 51K miles and it still runs like it was brand new. I hoping to get another 150K miles out of it!

70K? Damn. that's 3 times around earth.
The car will easily run to 200K and more.. just continue to take care of it! And geez.. get a Smart car or something. I can only imagine your gas bills.

Well long story short i drive a total of 100 miles everyday give or take to go school and work. 50 miles there and 50 miles home plus i drive 200 miles to atlanta georgia every other weekend. but my car is running great. motor just seem a little bit louder since i first got it prob. normal wear and tear.i know it is good to invest in gas saver or a cheap car but why buy the TL if im not going to drive it!!!!
Its high man sometime i fill up twice a week when gas was sky high like 4 months back it was close to 100 a week!!! if i can afford a smart car i would get that, and i hate the smart car!! rather get a civic anyday.... but a 93 94 95 civic now days is close to 4 grand because its a gas saver.
haha man I praying to god that my car last that long. i seen a Dodge desil turbo the ones with 8 wheels for sale with 300k miles.
I bought it last year at 60k miles for $24k. i put down 5k cash and been paying it for a year now do the math sounds about right

With proper maintenance, and it sounds as though you are on the right track there, your engine should last far longer than 130,000 miles. I've seen small block Chevies go well over half a million miles without a tear down and/or rebuild. And I have to believe the engine in our TL's should have no problem replicating that kind of life. I know of a driver of an early '90's Integra who, at the time of his article, has 315,000 miles on his car with the original clutch assembly and I would bet without a tear down of his engine.

That is pretty impressive. 70K miles in one year? You should look into a VW diesel or a hybrid. You must spend all your waking moments in the car, and probably sleep in it too! More power to you man. I'd love to read your post next year when you hit 200K!

Take care of it and it will last for many, many miles, but maybe some other items will go south, but not the motor. In your case the resale value with certainly plummet as the miles increase, but it will keep running. My daughter has a '00 Maxima she purchased in 2002 with 23K, and now with 180K it runs like new and we have only replaced the alternator, passenger side window switch, a heated seat switch, and other normal maintenance items, but it now needs CV boots and a rear cat as it's due for inspection in a couple of months.

ADVANCE.
I think you are doing pretty good. I'm thinking these are highway miles? If so, don't trip cuz I used to drive that many miles on my '97Corolla and its still going at 220,000 miles. All I did was change oil and timing belt, starter and all the other stuff. Anyways, you know Toyota's and Honda's go a looong waaay. Also my newphew's '92 Integra is at about 260,000 plus miles now? That car is running like a champ too, and that had a lot of city miles. So I'm thinking with our TL's, miles should be a cake walk if you take care of your car, for most of them. Hope this helps.

Your fine....I will pass you in about two-three weeks. Just hit 128,000 miles today. I do 1000-1500 miles a week (5 days) and have to change the oil once a month (5000 miles) so no worries.
Your math of 100 miles a day every day is 700 miles a week and with the trip to Atlanta, you would hit 1000 miles a week. At that amount, you should have about 48-50k a year not the 70k. I guess you have had it about a year and a half? I am a 55-65k a year guy and I gotta say, the TL is the ultimate highway daily driver. I just got back from Augusta, GA today. The car is ment for this.
Try to get ahead on the car payments if possible. It would suck if you had 200k and you still owe 8-10k.

Maintenance will take you a long way..
Why compromise and drive a small uncomfortable car to save gas.. I'd rather spend more on gas and drive a nice comfortable good looking car..
I've seen so many Hondas pushing 250-300k miles on them it's ridiculous.. when I had my del Sol and Accord I always thought what the hell if the motor blows I'll just throw a JDM single cam in it and keep running or an H22 as I did in he Accord when the H23 blew..
Anyone knows what we could expect to cashout for a full motor refresh?
Talking about freshening up piston rings, all the gaskets etc etc
Maybe the guys running turbo/supercharged setups could have a rough idea of the cost to refresh a TL motor..

Think you tranny would go before the motor lol; I bought my car last july with 48K, now it has 67k. The transmission is starting to act up on mine; i get rough shifts, kicks and whine from time to time. I change my oil every 2.5k and tranny fluid every 6k w/ the lucus ATF stablizer.
Engine is very sound, but not the tranny...

bukjoe.. I know you still owe money on the car but if I were you I'd either buy a beater for commuting or start investing in spare parts if you have room. New heads.. trans.. just parts you see along the way at cheap prices. Make sure you're very conservative on fluid changes and maintenance. There's no reason why a quality car can't go 300K+ miles.. with routine maintenance.

Ditto, I had a 98 3.2TL with 182,000 miles on it that I traded out and bought myself an 04 TL with 50K Miles (but I bought my wife a Lexus RX350)
I did change the oil regularly and with similar maintenance on this one, I do expect to keep it past 200K miles.

???????????
Yea good thinking. I will be sure to do this
I hope i get that far

damn. that means your car will only last around 2-3 more years tops at this rate.
70k a year X 3 =210k + 130K = 340k ??? if you maintain your car properly.

It is debatable whether you need synthetic oil. Dino oil has come a long way.
Also, starting to use synethetic on a high mileage vehicle which has not used synthetic before can cause problems because it can loosen engine deposits which can clog things.
Also if you do mostly highway driving, changing the oil every 5000 miles is not necessary and unlikely to prolong engine life. Just go by the MID.

If you spend $100 a week on gas, I am pretty sure you would not spend that much renting a room closer to school. Also you wouldn't have the high risk of accident, the more you drive the more likely you are to be involved in one. I personally would never be willing to commute that much but that's just me.

after reading this thread I dont feel bad for having almost 46,000 on my 06. I was actually just thinking about how i have way too many miles on it on my way to school earlier!
This car is great for long drives.
And bukjoe and mmade22 have you guys seafoamed your cars yet?
