Just Got Back From the Test Drive

Okay,

We just got back from driving the TL...my mom decided it was the car she wanted...she was set on getting it.

BTW...they took $1500 of MSRP for a non-navi...don't know if that's good or not.

Now I have a dilemma, my dad out of nowhere is pushing the Accord. He's telling my mom it's the same car for $25k...I can't tell if she's buying it or not, it's hard to tell.

What can I do to seal the deal?...my mom said the TL was DEFINATELY the car she wanted after the test drive, now i'm not sure.

Its not the same car. If she can't see that then buy the Accord.

I would suggest NOT to get the accord. COme on......live it up a little.

I would tell the dealer 30,000 for the car. Maybe you can push for some other goodies, but don't pay more than 30 g's for non-navi.....unless there is color issue(like you can't find another dealer with same color combo)

Accord and TL is different yet similar. Difference is much more compared to similiaities......and its worth it from my opinion.

YOUR MOM DESERVES BETTER....keep saying this and GOOD LUCK!

How's about asking your Dad to test-drive 04TL? Did he?

Lots of Accord lovers said the same thing, but some of them would change minds after trying it.

BTW, how's about $2k off MSRP?

He did drive it...he said it was "ok"

And my parents absolutely SUCK at buying cars, they NEVER negotiate. The dealer said $1500 off right away...no negotiation, I said they could do better, my dad's like, "no no, that's it"

Negotiate.....

You got to negotiate, since it's a non-navi car. Less demand on it, therefore, your parents should get a great price for it. Gota be less than 31k. I think you gota to take your dad for a test drive in the morning after he wakes up and smell the coffee(... TL car smell... )

Yeah, the sales manager (or someone) fed them this BS about $31.6k being a special promotion price to unload a few TLs...and that he can only keep the "sale" price until Friday...so my parents are like..."that really must be the rock bottom price"

Ok...is this reasonable?

I'm gonna tell my mom to offer $31k...which is roughly $600 less than the dealer quote.

Nope...

Nope... Dealers have a 3% holdback of invoice or MSRP. Gota ask someone else on this forum. I believe their invoice is 30,300 or less. I say 30,500 is reasonable. Especially for a Desert Mist color....or ask the person who got the car in MA. Keep shopping around.... Tell the dealer your family brought two cars from them in the past. Don't act desperate....keep your cool...stay firm regarding the price...once they see you start walking, they are willing to negotiate. PS: Go on this Friday around in the afternoon and let them sweat......Good Luck....

Keep in mind, this dealer now only has about 5 TLs on the lot. 2 White, 1 Beige, Silver, and Red.

They had more, but seem to be moving them quick

Sounds like a good price to me. I paid $32,126 in Colorado because of supply/demand.

These guys are dreaming...

It's a TL. They're selling like hot cakes. You expect a dealer to sell one for $200 over invoice. I don't think so.

If you can get a non-Navi for anywhere in the low 31s, you'll be doing excellent. I agree, however, to offer them 30 to rock them back on their heels and then let them pull you up a hundred or so at a time so they think they've done something.

But you never, EVER, pay the first number they come up with. That's their grab for the brass ring- a try for a home run. Ignore it and start your first offer around their invoice or less (knowing they won't take it).

After all- it's just an invitation to "the dance." They have their starting price and you have yours. Each is equally ludicrous. You end up somewhere in the middle.

My personal policy is that I never buy until they have let me walk out the door after declining my offer and after convincing them that I am a serious buyer and ready to sign. If they let you go back out there among the wolves with a number, you can be pretty sure it's the best they are going to come up with. They know you are going to shop them.

If they let me get over the curb without running after me, and I am hot for the car, I will make a U turn, go back, and offer them $500 or so less than their last offer and wait for them to come back offering to split it with me.

After a knock-down, dragged-out battle like that, you have the satisfaction of knowing you are a battle-hardened pro and got the best deal possible on that car on that day in that town.

krg,
go to carbuyingtips.com

go to chapter 4 and look halfway down for price negotiation template.
http://www.carbuyingtips.com/offer.xls

hope this works.

heres the breakdown.....if i am wrong, anyone please correct me.
33,195 for AT non nav.
at the 1500 off sticker that comes to about 31.6k.(inc dest charge)

thats an 8% dealer profit. This site claims that 3-5% is what you should gun for . I live in bay area so i need to be more realistic on what % to go for.

Cost to dealer for car is around 28.7k roughly speaking.

Gun for 3% first..thats 30.1k (includes dest charge)
...or 4% is 30.4k

then no more than 5% .....which is....30.7k

If you get them at these %'s ,dealers would be making at least 1k+profit plus the holdback of 1k. If you let them get you at your current offer of 8% thats a 2300 dealer profit plus 1k holdback of total of 3300.00.....pretty good for them.

Hold strong, new cars are coming in.Remember to look for the Vin# and TU2 tires to see how long that puppy has been on lot!

Hope this helps, good luck.....

In PA you can get them $2,000 below sticker.

You are never going to see those fools after they sell you the car. Maybe you should take charge and negotiate the deal.
It sounds like your folks don't like to stir it up during negotiations. They seem conservative.

Don't offer what you want to pay...

See my post above/\.

If you want to get it for $31,000, (which isn't bad), offer them $30,000 and let them pull you up to $31,000. As I said, I would be happy with anything in the low 31,s AS LONG AS IT INCLUDES all freight, "dealer fees", "document fees" and "protection packages."

Don't settle on a price and then have them surprise you with a $495 "dealer fee" pre-printed on the buyer's order form, telling you it is a mandatory charge and everyone does it. :thefinger BS! Nothing is mandatory. Cross it off. Or, if they want to adjust the figure by subtracting the $495 out of the price and then add it back in later: Fine.

Look around, non-nav's are going for damn close to if not at, invoice. Here in the northeast I see postings all the time within $200 of invoice. Offer 30K like the previous poster said settle for no more than 30,500.

They openly told us that the car has been sitting for quite some time...that's why they can give us "such a good deal"

I'm gonna tell my parents to offer $1,000 less than the dealer did, which is $30.6k.

My dad is at the point where he's saying we're not getting it...my mom still wants it.

Get this...I had a TL background on our computer thinking that if my mom keeps seeing such a sweet looking car everytime she goes onto the computer, it may convince her a bit...my dad just changed the background to an Accord :rocketwho

Have you tried holding your breath until you turn blue?

But, seriously.... get the serial number and tell us what it is (approx) Look at the tires and see if it says "TU2" on it. Those are the improved ones. All cars shipped since mid-Feb 04 should have the newer compound tires. Some of the old ones had some vibration issues.

First off, I am probably the cheapest bastard that is on this forum.... (well, except for those people who buy regular gas, but I almost did...) but.. the Accord is NOT close to the TL. If it was I would have bought one. The NUMBERS make it look like the same car (dimensions etc). but the cars are really different.

As for price, be tough on them. You should be below $31K especially if it is sitting around. Check the build date on the car... If it has been there over one month they want to MOVE it. You might even go for the $30K some have mentioned.

I'd like to thank everyone who helped me, and gave me lots of good info.

Unfortunately, it looks like my mom is backing out of a sale, yet again.
My mom made it clear that she didn't want the Accord, and my dad gave up on it, and was ready to go back to negotiate on the TL...but for some unknown reason, my mom just completely backed out. She said she doesn't want a new car anymore? I don't understand it, I know it has nothing to do with money either. I mean, she just completely changed her mind...gave no reason at all. My dad doesn't even know why.

This happened about 6 months ago, she was set to buy a new suv, test drove it, said she loved it, it was an awesome deal...my dad was really ready to sign the papers too...and my mom decided she wanted to wait

I thought she really loved the TL and this was finally gonna be it, but evidentally I was wrong...I really don't know what's holding her back.

So, i'm done...she's on her own...she always gets me all excited about buying a car, then dissapoints me...she thinks I shouldn't be worried about when or what she gets, but I just really love cars...I'm a true auto enthusiast

Knowing my mom...she could completely change her mind again by tommorow, and go buy the TL...she's like that

I'm not getting my hopes up though

so that's it I guess...I'll still hang around though, b/c I'm still a fan of the TL

Thanks again

Girlfriends and wives are a lot like our mothers, kiddo. Be prepared for more of this hot-cold behavior throughout life.

No cheesehead, don't beat me, please, it WASN'T a sexist comment! I was just kidding...no...ahhhh...oohhhh...yeahhhhh....

Yeah...I guess that's true...my mom included

She just has no interest in cars...She told me that she thinks of cars as nothing other than a neccesity, and I guess that's why she's so nonchalant about buying one.

Now THAT'S Venus and Mars, baby. "X" chromosome - car as object to get you places. "Y" chromosome - car as object to get you laid
