I just replaced the timing belt in my 07 TL Type S. it has 170K mikes and this is the third timing belt. Previous owner replaced at 140K.
I initially installed it with 1 tooth off, and after running the engine in the garage, and getting the codes, I reinstalled the belt. I then took it around the block and all seemed fine. She was running great. I drove it less than a mile and as I pulled into the drive way, She died with a pop.
The timing belt stripped out at the crankshaft gear - See pics -
Now the Fire wall side camshaft wont move, and I'm betting I've got bent valves.
My question is : Are all J35A8 engines the same? I found a 2005 ACURA RL Engine 3.5L for sale. It is a J35A8, just like my 07TL Type S. Can I drop this long block in and bolt on all my external components to it?
Thanks guys for the help Brand new timing belt. 8 minutes of run time
RL j35a8 will bolt up and make a little bit more power due to better camshaft. If you can get an RL motor I would do that over a Type-S. Not sure if you are At or MT, But you might have to change some stuff over
It has been done before, a guy swap RL motor to his TL-S and here is the thread. He does mention some component will needed to be transfer from the old motor for the swap.
2007 TL-S J35 rated 286 HP, 2007 Acura RL J35 Rated at 290 HP "SAE Correction method" all of that being said its 4 HP differences. I don't know where you guy get the 14 HP from

they used to be rated for 300 crank hp before they changed the rating. :p in 2006 which dropped it 10 crank hp
still a good upgrade for 4 hp and more TQ throughout the area under the curve since the RL camshaft were more aggressive to move that 2 ton tank. I have the camshaft spec sheets TLS VS RL somewhere

Oh so you mean our TL magically drop HP from 270 to 258? :P .... LOL now back to topic, yes I know the RL has improved TQ band on the low since I drive that 2 tons tank every day now

I don't see the thread link. Thanks for the info though, I'll do a search when I get a minute.

Love that 2 ton tank . Just wish the bearing the CF drive shaft was easier to service vs paying 1.2k for a new one.
The block I am getting is a J35A8 out of a 2005 RL SH-AWD. I don't think there will be an issue, but I am going to be thread searching like mad to find any differences, in the bolt on component items. Im happy for the increase in power and torque, but honestly Im happy getting a 105k motor to drop in my 185k car. I should be able to get another 100k out of this thing, before I hand-me-down it to my kid.
Yes, I was planning on a full service - or as much as I can do. Since I just did that on the engine that blew, I have a good amount of new parts to switch over.
he has a blown motor. Might as well for 14hp for an extra 1-2 hour of swapping over stuff
I can't even imagine it being more than an hour of labor. I mean, if he has both engines out of the car, it should be rather quick to swap everything over. I wouldn't do it for the performance upgrade alone, but in his scenario, I think it's a wise move.
That crank pulley is a pain in the ass to get off the crank without doing the starter blimp. There is a tool on amazon that makes it easier with an impact gun due to the larger area it hits on vs a standard impact socket.

they’re the same exact engines. The RL doesn’t have different cams then the 07-08 TLS. Only difference in hp numbers is where they took them from in the rpm range. They make 286 @6200 310 @ 6500 who knows how much at the 6900 rpm redline.

What? do you know what are you talking about? TL-S cam is hollow and has slightly different lob profile than the RL cam. Meanwhile RL cam are solid.
Bonus question since you know everything. Why RL has extra 4 HP over TL-S?

That’s completely wrong. RL cams are gun drilled forged and hollow all the way to the timing belt pulley. They are known as the best factory cams you can run. Highest lift, longest duration, and the lightest, You need to do some research. I’ve taken more of them apart than I can count and have 3 sets of the cams in my house right now. They don’t even look close to the same, and the lobes are pressed on the TL Type S cams.
