internal gas filler flap
I am trying to think of the best way to describe this but on all of the cars I have owned before my 06 TL when you take the gas cap off there will be a little stainless steel (I assume SS) flap that would keep from the filler being "open".
When I was filling up the TL for some reason I had the urge to look and I do not have one. Should I have one? Basically after I take the gas cap off the tank is "open" without the pump nozzle needing to push this flap open to put fiel in the tank.

B16 Swapped TL
Sometimes they are further down the gas filler neck. Essentially a One way valve that helps ensure you can get gas in but little chance it sloshes back out.

No, i'm pretty sure it was there. Whenever I'd dry the car after a wash, I'd open up the filler cap just to pick up some residual water. I remember noticing the flap in the filler neck. In fact, I used to poke at it just to see how it worked.

They did away with the flap when they quit selling leaded gasoline.
When unleaded gasoline came on the market, the nozzle was made slightly larger than the nozzles for leaded gasoline, and they put in the flap to restrict the opening so you couldn't put leaded gasoline in a car designed for unleaded.
Now that leaded gasoline is no longer available at the pumps, there is no need for a restriction in the filler line, so that's why the flap is gone.
