Interior Door Handle Lighting

im not really a huge fan of BMW's (reliability and expensive replacements) but i love the style and such but i could never see myself owning one. but my friends father has a 5 series and i sat in the back, and i noticed thye have projected lighting in a little hole on the inner part of the interior door handle aswell as they have another set of interior ambient lighting in the rear (like our front lights, just in the rear aswell), and i went crazy for it, i was wondering if anyone has done this or attempted to do so, it seems like it would be a lot of precise drilling and i really liked the idea of doing this in our cars.....any thoughts?

Pics would be helpful, but it doesnt seem like it would actually be too hard. It would just require a power souce, not sure what the door does for that as the you would not want them to go off when the window locks are engaged.

I was in the process of this mod back in 2003 for the 3rd gen TL until Acura took my car back.

It would be a great mod, blue LEDs and a small hold drilled into the plastic housing (from what I remember, the best place to put it was at the front upper edge, or top edge pointing down).

The most logical connection point would be the lights for the power window switches (ony prob would be that they turn off when the master switch for windows is turned off at drivers door). Use a 500 or 550 Ohm resistor in series with each blue LED to get 20mA of current to the LED and a 3.5V drop on the LED.

Good luck!

thanks man

i don't think id ever be able to bring myslef to drill holes straight into the door handles, because id need to drill a snake hole so i can run the wire. but id definatly get this done. i think a stop by streeteffectz is in order.

crazymjb - lemon

NFLblitze1 - I would recomend removing the door panels before doing this mod to acess the connections and dril the holes.

sdounds pretty simple to light up, hook it up to the keyless entry module, so when you unlock the car it lights up, but make sure you have a timer module so it only stay on for a certain amount of time

Would LEDs be dimmable along with the rest of the lighting. Which leads into my other Q, if you replace the stock yellow lamps with super brite LEDS can they dim?

yes they do dim, but just not as much if they are hooked to a circuit with a regular bulb. look at the TL's cluster, it's is all LED's and dims almost to off, but thats because there is no regular bulbs in that circuit

It's like Japanese RL (Legend) have door handle as well as pedals lit in blue.

Inspire(... Accord but really TL's level of luxury) has footwells illuminated

i'd want them to light up all the time when the car is on, and work with the brightness settings which would be perfect. im going to look into this.
