Instant MPG Displayed?
Instant MPG Displayed?
Hey guys. I remember getting a 3rd gen TL as a loaner car a couple years ago and it showed your current MPG on the trip computer. I have an 07 6SM Type-S and can't seem to find this feature. Did they discontinue this feature?
There's no "instant" mpg feature but it does show the average mpg since last reset. It's in "trip computer", hold down the select button to reset it. I reset mine every tank. Hope this helps.
With the Navi hack I can get instantaneous MPG info, but I think that is only for the 04-06. Try looking into the Navi hack for the 07, I'm not familiar with it since I've got an 06.
Only hack for '07/'08 is the splash screen.
No instant MPG, just cumulative since last Trip Computer reset.
There is also a "Range" or "Miles To Empty" screen. From the Trip Computer, press the "^" or "v" on the MID Controls to go to "page 2" for Range/Miles to Empty.

So was I just smok'n something and dreamed it? I swear I remember seeing what I was getting. Maybe I was just in dream land. I also got loaned a TSX...maybe it was in that car?
I had an 07 TL Type S and no instant mpg. Kind of sucks as almost every car I have owned with a onboard computer gives you instantaneous so who knows why the 3rg gen TL didnt have it. Its something I always like to watch to but oh well.

The Nav hack was nice for a week or two and then I stopped using it for a couple of reasons:
1. It dominates the screen and is predictable. You get 5-10mpg under load accelerating and 50 MPG coasting with your foot off the gas. The bar chart tops off at 50 and you'll always get 50 coasting until you touch the gas.
2. As you'll soon realize, instant MPG will not translate into actual MPG. You'll then appreciate how accurate the MID is in reality because it comes very close to actual.
3. For those of you that complain about the inaccuracy of the MID, you'll find the calculated MPG of the Hack screen to be ever more optimistic that the MID is claimed to be. In my experience the MID is within .5MPG of actual anyway and that is good enough for me. Most of this relates to the fact that only an integer value is displayed in MID .vs. a floating point number (xx.x) and .5 is the round-off error of integers.
In general, you get 30-40 MPG via instant when you humming down the freeway at a steady speed. The screen gets consistent and predictable pretty quickly.
I had the hack for 3 years and didn't update things once I upgraded to the latest DVD since I never used it.

Okay, well thank you for the responses. I must have just cleared the trip computer and watched the new numbers change. Damnit. I really thought our cars had it. Just one reason I've always loved BMW.
I would like to do the Navi hack...been reading up on it but I'm kind-of computer retarded. They need to post a picture thread on how to do it for dummies like me.

4th generation has it.
I have an 07TL-S and no instantaneous MPG info.
I had a loaner 2011 and that car did have the instant MPG. I found it amusing at first then distracting and finally useless. As noted, if you accelerate you get about 8 MPG, if you take your foot off it goes to over 40.
BTW that car did nothing, in my opinion, better than the model I own. The steering feel was nonexistent and it was butt ugly.

Yes, the TSX has instant. I really liked that feature when I had a loaner TSX for the TL's brake TSB. With it's help, I was able to maintain a 37mpg 2-way average from the dealer to work and back (city streets). It was kinda like driving a video game...
