Inaccurate Miles to Empty reading
I just finished a long trip from D.C. to Montreal and back for the Grand Prix. My TL averaged 28 MPG and 65 MPH over 1098 miles. Anyway, last night my MID indicated 4 miles to empty when I filled up. I could only get 14.3 gallons in the tank - . Seems a little off to me.
I called Acura Customer Relations and they said that is the reserve portion of the tank. I guess I'll start looking for gas when the MID says I'm out.
On a related note, the speedometer seems fairly accuate. I passed a number of radar stations that show the posted speed limit and your speed. My speed was actually 76 MPH when the speedometer read ~78 MPH.
Has anybody put more than 15 gallons in their gas tank or got the MID to read 0 miles to empty?
Don

There were a bunch of threads about this - There is around a 2-3 gallon reserve for some reason. The car will say you have no gas and run for a long time. oh well - guess its idiot proof. Your ok, we all have the same issue.

This info is excerpted from a very long thread I started about fuel tank capacities, etc. and is based on actual and precise testing
a. When the low fuel warning light comes on, if you are getting 25 mpg you can go 94 miles, but if you are only getting 20 mpg, you can only go 74 miles.
b. When miles to empty reads zero, that is time to fill up, but you can still go 57 miles at 25mpg, but only 45 miles at 20mpg.
c. When filling the tank, if you stop at the first shutoff, you will have about 17 gallons in the tank.

The thing is, the same subjects will continuously pop up because new people have old questions, but they still deserve an answer.
It only took me a couple of minutes to make the reply, and now the thread is active again, so for a while newcomers will find it and get their answer, and then someone else will miss it and ask the question.

The Chrysler's work the same way. When the "distance to empty" reads "0," then you are on the 2-3 gallon reserve portion of the tank. On most cars, its about 60 miles. Ron A's "precise testing" confirms this.
