I thought I was a good driver until...
I tried backing up an incline with 2 feet of room on either side. It was the first time since driving a MT that I had to do it. My 3g wanted to take off up the hill but i eased up on the clutch. Needless to say I was burning up the clutch. It was quite embarrassing having the car stalling while I was struggling to go in reverse. My stiff shoulder and the lack of light didn't help.

I used to park cars in manhattan.. and they had a second floor parking area. The cars needed to be brought up a long curved ramp that went to the second floor.. in reverse!!! First few times it was a bitch.. once you get used to driving in reverse on a MT, it becomes easier. But yes.. at first the cars used to stall on me.

Yea I always tell people thats the worst situation you can get into while driving Manuals. But like Kidrocking said, you'll get used to it after a while. Go find a hill in your neighborhood and practice on it and you'll have it down in no time.

I used to work at a dealership with drive on lifts, and I would use the handbrake to hold the car still while I find the sweet spot on the clutch. Drop handbrake, slight throttle with a little release on the clutch, done.

those new to a stick shift should go to a driving school- they have advanced classes for experienced drivers new to manual trans--
For real fun/training go to a local roadrace track- 200-300 bucks for a full day of you on course, with a pro race driver as your in-car teacher riding shotgun, or doing lead and follow the instructor around the track with full throttle full braking effort.
You will learn YOUR cars turning and braking ability,,, and eventually its limits~
Less expensive than the cheapest speeding ticket and way more fun for sure!
Now if I am chatting with a cop- he is a volunteer instructor doing a post session debrief on how to be smoother and faster--I love it- a cop telling me how to go faster
Using the handbrake is a standard thing I thought everyone knew on hills and clutch!!
Note your pass side outside mirror will tilt down slightly in reverse to help you see the curb
at least the auto trans cars do
You know how to curb the wheels so it doesnt roll away??--ck owner book for this info
