I Love the Exhaust Note on the TL

I posted something that I didnt like in a previous thread, so I figure I'll even it out with one of the many things I do love on the 04 TL: the exhaust note. Under wide open throttle and at certain RPMs, I just love the throatiness of the exhaust. Its classy and subdued, but still has a mean sound to it. Anyone else agree?

Yeah, it nice but not as nice as the exhaust note on the G35 coupe...

I agree with both posts.

I must admit the Japanese manufacturers have really stepped it up, exhaust-wise in the last few years.

I think the TL sounds great starting and idling, while the G35 exhaust note has a little more snarl when revved up.

You have to remember though, the G35 coupe exhaust does not belong on a TL. As much as I like the distinct G35 coupe/350Z exhaust note, it wouldnt mesh with the TL's personality.

I also really love the exhaut note on the TL. I'm coming from a 2004 Accord Coupe V6 with the 240hp vtec motor. The difference between the two cars is truly night and day. Now I can't wait to get my K&N typhoon filter system installed. Just out of curiosity, has anybody done any aftermarket exhaust work on the TL yet? Either in the header department, or catback systems? Any comments on the performance increase/sound?

csunracer,

Unfortunately Aftermarket Headers will never be an option on the 04 TL as they are welded on as a "J-pipe" or something like that. Its such a shame because on the 02-03 TL Type S, the Compech Headers added 30 whp and had the car pushing over 300 hp at the crank. What a shame.

ACK!!!! That's not what I wanted to hear. I'd really like to get to the 300hp mark in my TL.

I don't think the integrated exhaust manifold and close-coupled cats are quite the horsepower detriment that many believe them to be. How much of the power produced in 2nd gen cars was from the headers and how much was from the downpipe? There was definitely horsepower to be found in the downpipe - Acura addressed this and highlighted it in the marketing for the 3rd gen cars. By the looks of it, it's certainly better than it was in the 2nd gen cars. Bottom line, I don't think the exhaust has 30hp of restriction in it anymore. In fact, the 3rd gen makes about the same power on the dyno with an intake as the 2nd gen cars made with I/H/E.

Yes, the G35c, 350Z and even FX have a wonderful stock exhaust note. I have never heard a TL exhaust note when it passes by like the previous cars.

i agree it's nice during start-up but when cruising with the windows up and a little music it is very difficult to hear...a real annoyance for those w/ mt.

the bmw inline 6, now that one really purrs

I'm trying to figure out the exhaust note on the TL...one of my friends bought a WDP and when he started the car up I couldn't hear anything. I guess I'm used to my dual greddy mx setup on my v6 accord.

I don't care for the sound of the G35 sedan at all especially since it overrides everything (even with sound system turned way up). It's way too loud and just doesn't sound good. TL's tones sound much better and I can hear it when I want too. I haven't heard a G35 coupe, not sure if they are different. The G35 sedan I drove was one loud car inside, not good.

I totally agree w/ your first post. My TL-S had NO exhaust "personality" so to speak. This '04 will rumble a little when the rpms come back down to idle, I love it. WHen I start the car up, it sometimes sounds like I have an exhaust kit b/c there is a nice muffled rumble that goes through the cabin .. it's very impressive. I don't know, however, if this "rumble" is audible outside the car, or if the acoustics of the cabin somehow make the sounds more pronounced inside the car.

so this answers my previous question... it must be the acoustics of the cabin...

Bad comparison, ones a small sporty 2 door and ones a classy/sporty 4 door, use the G35 sedan as a comparison instead.

I drove both the Nissan 350 and the Infinity.. I used to love the Nissan till I sat in it and realized not only can I not fit in that shit box but the interior was gross and all plastic. The 2 door Infinity was nicer but dash/interior wasn't even close to the Acura and to be honest my buddies manual TL was so much more impressive than my buddies auto 2 door G35 in terms of power, so who knows.

Besides g35 is nissan anyway.. ewww gross

And in your defense so to say, I see so many people trying to juice up there TL, get more power, add this or add that to get more HP I mean this car is really not a race car or dragster, If I wanted the power and spead that most people on here crave, I would have bought an M3 but that wasnt practical for my line of work... I wish people would know what they are buying before they buy it, its not a race car.

I don't know what y'all are talking about cause I don't hear a dang thing. To me, there is no exhaust note at all. I can't wait untill someone comes out with a nice, more wallet friendly exhaust-I miss the rumble of my HKS Super Draggers that I had on my CL-S.
