I go by the MID and I change it when it gets to 15%. Just make sure you only reset the MID when you do the oil change.

I'm not comfortable going as long as the mid lets me on dino. It's gone over 10,000 miles before signaling a change. On synthetic, follow the mid.

For what it's worth I change my premium synthetic oil every 4,000 to 4,500 miles. At 70,000 miles, a peak through the oil fill hole looks like a brand new engine. I could probably triple the mileage on this oil and be fine but I don't mind changing the oil and it gets contaminates out.

You should drive less.

That's actually not bad. Do you do a lot of short trips?

Lots and lots of around town stuff. Wife goes to and from work 2x each day, ~7 - 10 miles each way. But traffic is reasonable - not much stop & go or stop & sit/wait.

A few higher RPM stints on the weekends every now and then - back roads and/or mild twisties.

Back when I was commuting 210 miles round trip per day the MID would let me go 11-12,000 miles before reaching 10%.

It doesn't sound unreasonable at all for around town driving.

Yeah, mmade22 does LOTS of highway miles - say 45k+ per year. Change his oil every 5k religiously. I think his MID usually says he's at ~50%.

If that were me, I might push it to 7,500, but no more.

Damn dealer did the first change, and the drain bolt was way over torqued...well over 70 foot pounds...never again

I follow the MID as well. It ends up to be ~ 6,200 miles on average.

About 4,500 with Mobil 1 and O.E filter.

MID probably says 30-25% when I change it.

Cool WOW you guy's are wasting alot of oil!

I drive aprox. 17k to 20k a year. I change my 0w - 20 Amsoil, with their filter. Two times a year!! So whats that about 8k to 10k and maybe a little bit more. I did once go for 20k with the Amsoil.
Now for the KICKER when I change the oil. I ALWAYS put in 5, yes 5 quarts! Boy I bet this will bring on a firestorm!!

Redline makes an excellent 20wt. Probably the best.

The HT/HS is higher than most 30wts so it flows like a 20 but protects as well as a 30. That would be my first choice if you're going with a 20wt. It has a higher % of esters than just about any other oil out there.

This is their 5w-20. Their 0w-20 is still a good oil but no where near what the 5w-20 is.

I run Amsoil straight 30 because it rarely gets cold here and summers hit 110 degrees. I have no need for a 20wt but if I did it would be Redline.

What's the mileage on your car now?

I will be driving somewhere around that much (but a bit less) with my new job for the first two or three years...
