How many 3rd gen's have replaced Tranny?

Just wondering how many 3rd Gen's out there have had to start replacing their tranny's. I have been reading more and more about that on here, and my dealer told me this weekend that it appears they are having more problems with the 3rd Gen's as we get higher in mileage on some 04's and 05's. I have a small shutter in mine right now betweeen 3rd and 4th, for which my dealer just wants to put a new tranny in.
Of those who have had it done, thoughts?...commments on the new one?...

What year is yours, and how many miles? I think the problems stopped after 05. I have an 06 with about 21000, and no problems yet. I did change to amsoil syn ATF, and love the results. Here in the desert, heat will just kill a tranny.

mine is a very late build 04 - pretty much an 05 as they were selling 05's 3mos before my 04 was even built. I only have 44k on it...i have heard that a lot of both 04's and 05's are starting to show signs of transmission failure...

Oh i should mention that mine is a 5AT - most of the problems (besides the 3rd gear issue with 6MT) I have heard about is with the auto's...

What kind of problems where you seeing before the failure of the transmission? Or did it ever actually fail completely?

I am sitting at 35k and really can't tell much difference. I did replace the transmission fluid to the GM synmesh shortly after getting the car.

It sucks that there is still not a good clutch/flywheel combo available to put in when they do replace it.

Apples and oranges

We're talking about two different parts here, the manual and automatic which don't have anything in common. I for one am VERY interested in anyone who has had the manual replaced.

What were the symptoms of MT failure? Has anyone else had this experience? Did you have them put in a clutch while the trans was out of the car (should be a big savings in overlap labor).

As I stated above, mine is a 6MT...

No I did not have them replace the clutch... didnt need it...

I was noticing a lower raspy sound... like something was scraping against something (non-metallic sounding) in the lower RPMs as I would accelerate... noise was always there, you just couldnt hear it in higher RPMs...

My early 04 is going in next Monday for a few rattles and most importantly the 04-020 Service Bulletin (2nd gear inspection). The bulletin says to check for a punch mark over the 12th character of the engine compartment VIN which would indicate if the A/T has already been inspected and repaired. I believe I found the VIN they are referring to and there is no punch mark.
I also seem to have the 5th gear Vibration or Drone problem addressed in Service Bulletin 05-017, but in low RPM 3rd gear.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but needless to say I am not happy w/ these tranny issues in what I thought was supposed to be a superior car. I wish I learned of this site BEFORE I bought my car in May.

In case anyone was wondering the transmission problems with the gen III's are a result of a issue with the HP produced couples with a design problem. I've 27k on mine, no problems yet. I also have the comptec SC on mine and still have no problems as yet.

Luckily, the tranny failure syndrome is far less common in 3G TLs than in 2G TLs. The initial run of 5AT 3G TLs, up to 14k, had an issue with the 2nd gear oil jet and a recall was announced long ages ago. So far, this tranny has held up pretty nicely and there don't seem to be widespread problems with it.

I had no problems with my very early build (just under # 1700) 2004 TL's tranny up to the time I traded for the RL at 56k miles.

I have a question. I have a 6mt and my Third Gears been popping out. Is there something wrong with my tranny and everytime i took it to the dealer they never seems to make this problem occur when they take it for a test drive. I had my brother drive my car and he been driveing mt for about 8yr and the Third Gear popped out on him too.

Just about 53k miles on my 04 5AT. at 49K I had the shop Foreman at work hook the HDS up to my car to check for fault codes just because sometimes it seems like it takes a little longer than it should to shift into 5th. No fault codes or slipping ,Mechanic says my tranny is fine. I'm going to take her word considering she replaced the tranny in my previous car , 01 3.2 CL Type S, and that one slipped real bad 2-3 and with only 80K miles at the time.

I've got 47K on my '06 and no problems so far. I checked the fluid the other day and it's dark and there was clutch material on the dipstick. Not a good sign but if shifts just like it did new.

If it ever does go out under warranty, I'm going to see if they will let my buy a high stall convertor for it and install it with the new trans. This car definately needs more stall.

I have a Sept 04 build and the first AT went at 33k for shutter between 3 and 4. Now with 49k the second is being replaced for the cases leaking but it shifts fine.

I had this problem with my 2nd gen 02 TL-S twice, you all should consider to file a lemon law complaint. It took a while but they took my car back and gave me my money back (not all of it but enough), I did a BMW for a while but didn't like it so, went back to Acura hoping that this problem would be corrected with the 3rd gen TL, had no problems with my last 05 TL with over 60K when I turned it in and so far none with my 07 TL-S at 9K. There are time limits on when or if you can do so.

I have a 04 TL bought in January 2004. I just replaced the transmission about two weeks ago at 43500 miles. I was getting a horrendous whine and a hard shift between 2nd and 3rd gear.

The whine is still present but at much much lower volume.

My understanding is that the 2007 TL-S uses a heavy duty transmission from the RL.

Can anyone confirm this and is there a history with this transmission? I only have 7,500 miles so I haven't had any problems yet.

Thanks

When they first replaced it, the new one had a really bad whine. I had to get the district rep to ride with me before they would replace it again. The second new one is perfect. it acts just like the orginal except it doesn't shudder between 3rd and 4th.

How bad was the whine? Was it in all gears?

When they give you a replacement transmission, they give you a remanufactured model of a previously failed / returned transmission.

I say returned because sometimes the transmissions may have been given to the factory for repair but after they inspect its innards, they may have been nothing wrong with it.

Acura is really beginning to scare me. How in the world can they allow these TLs (2G and now 3G) to continue with MAJOR flaws? It's sickening.

Yeah now that the 3G's have been given enough time to get some mileage on em, I'm surprised by how many transmissions have been replaced. How long is the transmission warranty?

they told me it would be for 3 year 36,000 miles

So they are going to put a failed transmission back in the car, thats crazy, doesn't make any sense

the whole car has 4yrs, 50k bumper to bumper and that is it for the 04. Though my dealer told me that acura was extending the 04's to 100k powertrain like they did for the 2nd Gen's. Dont know how true that is...I bought a 100k warranty when i bought the car for this exact reason...Piece of mind...i only pay for oil changes and brakes(rotors) to 100k. If they replace ur tranny and you DONT have the extended warranty, the replaced tranny is garunteed for 3yrs or 36k from the date they put it in.

i'm basically having my tranny replaced........
https://acurazine.com/forums/ramblings-12/santas-honest-answers-mail-164437/

while it was out they replaced the clutch, flywheel, and TO bearing saving me about $1500 in labor. the flywheel costs $500, clutch $312, and TO bearing is like $70 (not warranty of course)

the tranny was makin a whining sound through all the gears......so they pulled the tranny and said the inner bearing were shot....replaced them, then had to replace the tranny housing cuz of a groove in it.......put it back together now it sings while driving.....pulled tranny again and now they are replacing the ring gears and the countershaft.

the only problem is the countershaft is on "national back order"
my car has been there 3 weeks and the countershaft wont be in till the 21st (at least), so that will total over a month that it will be in the shop (barring any other unforeseen problems)

hopefully this will fix it

yes it was in all gears but you couldn't hear it at highway speed. It was the worst while taking off.

You must have gotten my old transmission :-)

Actually, mine just got replaced for that very same problem a few weeks ago. The new one still has some whine, just not anywhere near as loud.

U never get a Brand NEW Tranny. It's always a rebuilt one.
When i had my 03 CL-S, they replaced my tranny and the changed the shift points, reprogramed my ECU. My car was shifting way b4 redline making my CL-S a slow POS that jerked everytime i changed gears. I complained a lot but they werent able to help me. I finally decided to sell the CL-S.

Got mine form the dealer yesterday, of course they couldn't duplicate the shutter between 3rd and 4th...said they flushed the fluid but i dont believe them. Fluid is still brown and not red at all. My service adv. said just come back in a week or so and take a service tech for a ride, if i can make it shutter once, a new tranny is coming my way.
He then said outside near my car, "Between you and me, we're just gonna order a new tranny for ya, we have done about 8 already in the last 3mos. Looks like we may have the 2nd Gen problem haunting us again."
That just made me feel REAL great...thank God i got the 100k warranty. Other then the tranny this car has been Fantasstic, LOVE IT....but this tranny issue is most likely gonna be a deal breaker for me for any more Acura's.
I told my service adv. "Hello Lexus!"

2004 TL (AT) - Sutton Acura here in Macon, GA had to replace my tranny. Was shuttering somewhere on the high end of 2nd gear to the point of hitting 3rd. At first they couldn't duplicate the problem but after taking their senior tech out for a few miles of stop and go's he could feel it. His response was, "Yep, I feel it now. Let's go back to the dealership and order you a new tranny (refurb)."

It's sooo nice to not have to argue with a dealer. They are all stand up people and took care of it right away. Had right at 40K on the car when I noticed it. I bought it used at 38K so I count myself as fortunate that it was still under warranty. FYI - Sons Acura in Morrow, GA are all a'holes. They WILL fight you tooth and nail for any warranty work. If you're south of Atlanta, drive the extra 40 min south to Sutton!
