How to Improve Gas Mileage in TL Type S?
Hi All;
I owned an automatic 05 TL for about 3.5 years and always averaged around 27-28 MPG during every fill up.
I just bought an 07 TL Type S with 10k miles on it and expected to lose 1mpg as per the rating but I actually lost more like 3mpg.
Any recommendations on how I can improve the mileage?
A few things I currently do:

A few things I currently do:
- ensure I have enough tire pressure (35psi fronts / 33psi rears)
- ensure my air filter is clean
- dont mash on the accelerator
- keep my speed below 80mph on the highway
- use premium unleaded gas

I have to tell you, its nearly impossible not to step on the gas with this car. It just begs to be gunned. I just got a radar detector to hopefully keep me out of trouble.

There's not really any mods to improve mileage. The only thing I can think is to remove as much weight as possible. Don't buy any of those ebay shits that say you gain extra miles per gallon cause there all crap.
But dude you bought the type s to drive it slow??? I can't believe I'm hearing that. Its a luxury sporty car but it begs to be stepped on.

Keep the rpm under 2k ALL the time, you'll get fantastic mpg.

Better mileage?
I think you get better gas mileage by not reading the performance mod section first off!! No kidding you will read these posts and stopwatch your times from zero to 60 , spend boo coos of money you don't have, not to go green but to have more power and performance, Ohh yeah get a supercharger setup reset your mileage meter and go wow when you see 6 mpg on your gauge , but smile as you excellerate. Nways not being a smart ass it's just funny, Hey im sure I have said it myself before. Enjoy the pedal while the gas prices are low when it gets back up to $4.00 a gallon Im sure you will have a hott topic. Ohh just to add I did hear that you get better gas mpg somehow by picking up your speed not at snails pace but little quicker not flooring of course but getting to your constant speed a little quicker if that makes sense? who knows

Believe it or not I was going to get a G35 instead of the TL Type S since its even faster and allegedly handles better but my Bro owns one and gets really bad gas mileage (18mpg). We figured out why. When I am doing 70mph in my TL Type S, my RPMS are around 2200. In comparison the RPMS on his G35 at the same speed are over 1000 higher. Apparantly Infinity has no overdrive on that car, likely purposely done for performance.
I was always impressed by the 28mpg I was getting from my TL and was a bit taken back when I saw my type S getting 3mpg less under the same driving conditions, despite the spec sheet only rates it 1mpg lower. Oh well, its the price you pay for Sport.... until we get electric cars that don't suck.

But anyways, I'm averaging almost exactly 20mpg with my G35. My wife is averaging 22mpg in the TL. However when I drive her TL, I average the same 20mpg... She even complained saying her car gets lousy fuel economy whenever I drive it
But anyways, I tested this on all my cars (since they all have fuel economy read-outs, 2 of them show instant economy)...
I can average 27-33mpg on the freeway if it's flat, and I feather it the whole time... (That's including the G35) My commute to work is 40 miles each way.. There's a hill about in the middle of the commute with a 6% grade. As soon as I hit the grade, my instant economy goes to crap. Even if I feather the gas and keep the RPMs @ 2000rpm, the instant readout shows 8-10mpg. Even in my GTP which I normally average better fuel economy than both the TL and the G35. The average economy on the display will drop to 14-16mpg if I reset the display when I left home. By the time I get to work (which is another 10-12 miles further), the average makes it's way back up to 20 on both the G35 and the TL. (or 24, in my GTP).
When my wife drives me in the TL to work (her work is on the way to mine), and picks me up, she averages 22mpg over the course of the tank... When I drive the TL to work and drop her off and pick her up, I average 20 over the course of the tank.
I've plugged my scanner into the OBD-II port (for other reasons) and tracked the numbers on my commute to work... The important figure that correlates to fuel consumption is not necessarily engine RPM, but engine load. That's why even tho my I tried to keep engine RPMs around 2000rpm on the 6% incline, my instant economy was 8-10mpg. Whereas on flat pavement at the same RPM or higher, instant economy was reading between 25-28mpg in the G35 and > 30mpg in the GTP.
This is all on 10% oxygenated gas too... Before they had that crap mandatory year round, I was averaging 22mpg in both the TL and G35, and my wife was averaging 24 in the TL.
I guess what I'm saying, is that you can't compare the fuel economy numbers of two cars, if they are driven by different people in different circumstances.

At least what I do is, I drive in SS mode and shift up very fast. Start on second, as soon as i hit 20 mph I am on 4th geat and at 40mph I hit 5th gear. My tank runs 200 miles per fill up. Thats how I measured it. I have a 08 Type-S

To the OP, just stick to what you are doing and you'll see the numbers go up.

Drive in SS all the time
In city and neighborhood driving, I just put mine in SS and upshift to the highest gear as often as possible.
When I had my 04 6MT, I averaged around 25-26 by upshifting as early as possible, sometimes engaging 6th gear @ 35 mph.

C mon dude ... 25 MPG for a type-s with 3.7L engine & 286 HP ? That's good enough for a lot of us ... LOL ...
I always anticipate when I drive such that I don't have to brake suddenly ... also I tend to accel. gradually most of time (minus those impulsive moments when I tried to race someone who tried to challenge me ) ...

Don't feel bad. I went from 29-30MPG with my 06 TL to 23-24MPG with my Type S, but I know the reason why. I drive her like a mad man. My driving style in the Type S is totally different then how I drove my 06. It's like the car is begging me drive it hard.

Get a Scan Gauge II (SGII) to get semi-instantaneous read-out of various parameters: MPG, throttle position, fuel consumption rate, etc. That should help you find an optimal driving style for best fuel economy when you don't want to take advantage of your TL-S performance capabilities.
Also, decelerate in gear to take advantage of the fuel injector cut-off. An remember, according to the service manual, the 6-spd manual tranny cuts off the fuel injectors at ~1050 rpm.
My SGII taught me something about the cut-off -- downshifting to keep above 1050 rpm needs a blip on the throttle so that continuing the deceleration will cut-off the injectors in the lower gears.

i am only getting 20 mpg on both tls one is a type s and one it non s.
i have tired everything an i am not hard on the car.. they just suck the gas down

I also noticed since I got the S type, I have been a bit more aggressive on the pedal than I was on my 05 TL.

I went from an '06 TL 6 speed to an '07 Auto Type S. I lost about 3 mpg as well. I get around 20-21 around town with some highway and straight highway I have gotten 30mpg. My '06 I would get 32-33 on straight highway and 23 around town.

Area on my XM
I'm conservative on the gas pedal, with 75/25 highway/city mileage, and I average around 26 mpg. Which is about what the wife gets in her 2.3 Mazda3 (according to the onboard gauge).

When I got my car it had 8 miles on it, I was averaging about 280 miles per tank and about 18 MPG in the city. I took a road trip during the holidays with 10,900 miles on the odo, I averaged 30MPG for over 500 miles to include about 30% city/70% highway miles. I guess the car gets better as the miles add up. Now I normally get 22-24 MPG in the city.

im one of the unfortunate ones that get 16 miles to the gallon, like everyone said this gas pedal is just waiting to be stepped on im glad i have a 4 banger just for the city, because this thing just eats, its like a blackhole. LITERALLY.

You would think being able to shift into 6th gear at 35mph would save gas, while that single act alone would improve gas mileage, it doesn't count for all the other times you red line it and shift right before hitting the rev limiter...lol.
Yes, much like the Integra GS-R, the TL-S needs to be driven hard in order to feel right. Actually, I'm sure this is the case for any sports car (luxury or not)...
Anyway, on to what I was going to say, I haven't reset the trip monitor since I've gotten the car, I've driven eighteen thousand some odd miles over a 650+ hour time period. I average 16 mpg with an average speed of 25 mph. This obviously accounts for traffic and other times the car is on and not moving but it is what it is. I personally don't look at mpg so much only because regardless of the rating, I know I'm going to get significantly lower numbers. I got the car for many reasons, mpg not really being a factor. I enjoy every minute I'm driving the car which for me is enough of a trade off than 8-10 more mpg. Basically, being a previous owner of an Integra that could rev to 9600 RPM's I'm a firm believer that you should drive a car the way it was meant to be driven. Now, the luxury Sedan that the TL-S does warrant cruising at low speeds but my tachometer is almost always closer to the red than to the 0...lol
In short, screw improving gas mileage in the TL-S, let's find ways to make it faster!!

ur driving habits are the biggest factor in your MPG
I drive an 02 CLS with intake and headers and manage a respectable 24-25mpg in mixed driving and 21-23 in mostly city driving and 32-34 on the highway.......

lol WUT? cars get their accelleration from their lower gears not their over drive gears and yes G3X has them too
When both cars are doing the same cruising speed of sayt 70mph, the G is about 800-1k RPMs higher than the TL. My bro says when he does above 70mph, his gas mileage drops below 20mpg on his G whereas I can do 80mph in my 05 TL and get 30mpg all day long.
Thus I consider the G as a car that really doesn't have an overdrive b/c it rides like its in 4th gear compared to the TL when cruising.
