Step 1. Turn off VSA and put your shifter in Sport mode.
Step 2. Place your foot firmly on the pedal on the right and push it down to the floor.
Step 3. As the tach needle approaches your redline fuel cutoff point, bump the shifter toward the front of the car to shift to the next gear.
Step 4. Hang your head in shame as your realize that Sequential Sport Shift is more of a gimmick than anything.
Step 5. Put the stick back in auto mode or else risk driving around town in 1st gear for the next 10 minutes.

1. turn off VSA
2. Put into SS mode
3. Slam the gas to the floor, make sure you are holding tight to aviod torque steer
4. When the RPM needle gets 300 RPM before redline, shift up.
SS is a nice feature since it lets you hold gears for a little bit longer, but like the poster above said, its mostly a wow feature or a racing feature more than an everyday thing.

if you need to downshift while in 5th gear, simply tap the shifter toward the back of the car. The number on your dashboard display will change from 5 to 4. Continue to tap the shifter down and the car will downshift to the next lowest gear, as long as your car is going a speed that is within range of the next lowest gear.
I mostly just use SS to downshift when coming to a red light, manual style. I like to believe it preserves my brakes.

For drag racing, it's not going to do much for you.
It's nice if you're climbing a steep hill and it keeps hunting between 4th and 5th. You can just put it in 4th to stop the constant shifting and associated heat.
Going downhill, downshift to maintain speed.
Auto-X if you're one of the few auto-xing your auto, it's a nice feature to hold it in the gear you want.
For 99.99% of your daily driving, you're better off leaving it in "D".

leave it in D... if you floor it it'll downshift on its own
or
drop down to L... if you are in 5th it'll go to 4 and stay there
ss mode like previously stated is a way to stay in a certain gear, I find it is good for cornering.... NEVER use it to slow down, the car will infact downshift on its own to assist in braking, but NEVER to the point where it will strain and cause excessive heat/wear on the tranny

^ Agree, I only let the car itself do the engine braking 30mph and below, at 20mph it really slows down lovely by itself. I only SS to keep in gear If I feel the car is always hunting. I only used the paddle shifters once.

yes thats right- different years have 1st only and others will go to 2nd for you- thinking you are in a parking lot and forgot to reset to D5
PLEASE read the owner manual for tips on operating on hills and in traffic
and the allowable max up and downshift speeds- rev limiters etc
DO NOT use transmission to slow down- its for speeding UP!
BRAKES are cheap compared to $4000 trans, AND they are designed to slow the car!
To learn the cars performance and get real skills, attend a track day- High performance driving school at local racetracks across america
$250 for a day of having a Pro race driver riding in your passenger seat, giving advice and feedback on braking points- turn down entry, apexing and exiting on the throttle~
Going fast has very little to do with the gas pedal
Smooth = speedy

^ It is safe. Let's say you are driving, when switching to SS, your tranny stays in the same gear you are currently at, and same works for vice-versa... It is a very smart system.

I use my SS everyday all day, i probably should of got a manual.
Gimmick this Gimmick that overall you have more control over the car, i'm not too worried about breakage? as i have 70k left to go on warranty.
Where do these $5k numbers keep popping up for transmission costs? Can't you just have the tranny rebuilt for 1k-1500?
Well i'm going to keep riding in SS, putting it in D is too boring for me.

Its fun to use, but overall i think its probably faster for drag racing if you just leave it in auto and slam on the gas. Agreed with everyone else SS is good in traffic or when you want that quicker response as you speed up... but i don't like that I can't downshift to 1st gear and that it automatically switches to 2nd gear as well in my 05.

I use it frequently, I don't think auto is better than SS when you're drag racing.
I've mashed the pedal before in AT and bounced off the rev limiter before on a road course; definitely not enjoyable.
It does help in daily driving if you need a burst of acceleration.
The shift is a bit slow, so you have to give shift 300-500 RPM prior to when you want ti to actually shift.

The TL closes the throttle between upshifts but doesn't blip the throttle on downshifts therefore manual downshifts might possibly wear the trans out quicker.
The only time I manually shift is for engine braking coming down a long hill or going uphill where it's constantly hunting between 4th and 5th. In this scenario, it's actually saving wear by holding it in gear manually.

Really i understand what your saying but the Transmission in D shifts up and down as many if not more times then i do with SS. So i don't see how it can be putting more wear on my transmission.
I'm still thinking 3k is even way high, unless you go to a stealership for repairs i wouldn't expect to pay this much. Though i haven't got any quotes so i really am in the dark on costs.
After having my transmission rebuilt in 2 other vehicles for under 1k and a local place, 3k leaves me to believe the TL transmission is more complicated? Anyways OT.
Love my SS =D

I think hate meant if you shift just to shift as opposed to shifting when necessary.
When I use SS there are definitely less shifting going on.
$3K is about right for rebuilding a TL tranny correctly.

I also use SS everyday just because it is more fun than D. I also downshift with it but usually only when the speed has dropped to where it is in lower RPMs. And ya, IMO I think if you were to drag with it then leaving it in D would be faster... just seems to me that it launches quicker with D than going 1 thru 5... but w/e

Burning Brakes
I use my SS about 75% of the time. I save wear on my transmission, because for example let's say I'm in 3 and I'm coming up to a light and know I will need to stop, I don't shift to 4 the way the automatic mode would, so I can save my transmission the wear from the shift. Am I really saving wear on my transmission? I'd like to think so.
Plus it's more fun.

I use it to force my car to hold gears in rush hour traffic..... car can pull in 5th gear well enough from 35+................to handle slow down speed up slow down speed up.................

pressing the shifter to the left when it is in drive enables SS
pressing the shifter forward changes gear up unless it would lug the motor
pressive the shifter backwards changes the gear down unless it would over rev the engine
.........[ ]-P
.........[ ]-R
[ U ]...[ ]-N
[ X ]<-[ ]-D
[ D ]...[ ]-L
X = shift lever
u= up gear
d= down gear

Seems like its goin faster because u dropped to a lower gear raising ur rpms and ya car is more responsive to ur foot on the pedal.....kinda like when u click the overdrive button off in older cars

But the problem with this is you're building more heat in the torque convertor trying to accelerate in 5th at lower speeds.

Shifting only builds heat in the clutch packs and doesn't affect overall fluid temps much. Trying to accelerate in 5th from a low speed will quickly send fluid temps soaring. Too much speed differential between engine and input shaft plus a decent load is not good for long periods of time.

Yeah i can't see why you would be in 5th gear at 35mph anyways, not going to pull very well getting up to speeds.
...
if in 4th shift down to 3rd
if in 3rd shift down to 2nd
OR
hit the brakes...
+1 for hit the brakes, less hassle

just out of curosity have you read about the problems these transmissions have going between 2nd and 3rd gear? I would rather hold the car in a specific gear than allow the trans to up and downshift repeatidly...under light throttle my car will be in 5th gear by 35mph...... but when you are between 35-45 it likes to go back and forth between 4-5 gears.....really no need for that if you are just rolling along slowing and speeding up.....
acura states that the trans fluid can easily exceede 315F when you are constantly shifting between 2nd and 3rd........ they said they fixed it but based upon how the replacement transmission acts, I doubt it.........the third gen forum is FULL of people who have 2-3 gear shudder and who's trans took a crap on them well before 100K
