How can I get tighter steering?

I have a 3G and I am curious as to what I need to do or if I can even make my steering tighter when Corning. The steering wheel feels nice but I want it tighter. I go on a lot of drives on back roads with tight corners. Any advice or parts that I need to accomplish this would be great, thank you

Not quite sure what you're asking here - I'd suggest Googling some steering terms.

Do you want quicker steering? That'd require a different steering rack.

Do you want heavier steering? The easiest option would be removing the power steering system altogether.

Or maybe you just need new tie rod ends.

Lowering springs and anti-sway bars, camber kits for tire alignment correction as well as front tower bar /brace, rear upper tie brace /bar, rear lower tie bar/brace

Heeltoe sells chassis braces as well.

Better tires.

chassis bracing will be the most helpful to your question. heavier wheels, removing PS pump, tires, and springs wont do what you are asking for.

Buy a sports car instead of a near luxury sports sedan. I had a TL, it is not a sports car. Yes, I have a BMW but I'm not trying to be an ass...the TL will never handle like a sports car, watch a sprint cup car on a road course, their is a crapload of body lean on those bad boys.

Ooooor... He could just put a smaller steering wheel on. That'll make the steering tighter.

Wait, OP, define what you mean by tighter.

Do you mean stiffer/firmer? Do suspension mods.

Do you mean smaller, more responsive turns, right at the wheel? Get a smaller steering wheel.

Ha yeah of course it's not a sports car, but I'm not wanting a sports car. I didn't buy it to have it feel like one from the get go, I bought it for the safety, the luxury, the looks, and a few mods will make it ride and feel like a dream. The perfect car for me, being 18.

Both! Want more responsive turns, and I want a firmer drive.

the type S steering rack might be what you are looking for. Coupled with lots of chassis bracing, it should feel more responsive and firmer

The best solution for the OP is to just slow down on corners especially back roads where there are a lot of blind spots

^This. There are a couple threads talking about retrofitting a Type-S rack, search it up. You can get one from a junkyard quite cheap and it is compatible. Not sure what the exact ratio is, but I am sure it is different. If you have ever driven a Type-S, you'd probably notice the steering feels so much better.

In my case suspension mods, sway bars, tires etc made all the difference. Feels perfectly fine to me, don't see a need to go to a Type-S rack. I am on my 3rd rack though. I had my rack changed twice under warranty. If I HAVE to do it again next time without warranty, you bet I'd do a a Type-S rack.

Oh and BTW, check to see the steering fluid has been changed recently. The last time I changed it, I did Amsoil and there was a HUGE difference to before. Not firmer or sportier but smoother.

Lowering will help by reducing body roll, as well as chassis stiffening, better tires, swaybars etc. Also make sure your tie rods are in good shape, some newer ones may tighten it up a little, I've always had good luck going with Moog Problem Solver.

There was a big discussion on the Type-S steering rack...however the general conclusion was if I'm remembering correctly....that it did nothing above and beyond the base rack.

the type-s rack does not have a quicker steering ratio.
it's the same and has the same lock to lock turns

the only thing that is different is the power steering pump which wouldnt necessarily make the steering quicker

true, but OP only said he wanted firmer, so he'll need the type S rack and type S pump

I dunno but my Type S steering feels way more firm and stiffer than my
base Tl. At first I though something was wrong with my Type S steering, but now
I love it. Feels like my old e36 M3 steering.
might be very expensive swapping a type S rack and power steering pump though.
The money could be spent on suspension mods

i dont know about ya'll; but my steering is fucking heavy at parking lot speeds.

i have a six speed and I usually have to rev it to get the pump going to crawl around in a parking lot

^^^^^this is why your steering wheel is too heavy at parking lot speed.

A quality set of coilovers will make the biggest difference. I reccomend Tein, BC, or ISC.

are you sure you still have power steering, lol? my 6-speed is effortless to turn if sitting still.

There's not much you can improve on the steering besides this:

1. New Control Arm Bushings (if yours are torn/damaged, it can cause a bit of play and odd tire wear. Mr.Heeltoe sells a performance replacement

2. Rear Sway Bar, 22MM setting is great for most people so they don't rip off the rear subframe mounts

3. Coilovers, this will make an impact in a good and bad way. Lower to much and the suspension geometry will be garbage.

4. Lighter rims -> you can pick some up that weigh a lot less than the factory wheels, you'll pick up HP and braking.

5. Better tires, if you get some performance tires you'll notice a night and day difference. Michelin Pilot Super Sports from what I hear.

6. Reduce weight in the car (get rid of spare, etc)

7. Alignment, get one done every 5K miles for free at firestone, lifetime alignments if you pay for it once!
