Hood scoop

Ok, not seriously thinking about doing this but I was wondering, would it be cool to put a scoop in the tl's hood? Don't freak out, I'm not talking about a 6" tall hole in the hood, just something modest and functional. like a 6" wide 2" deep indention into the hood right above the shortend intake, kind of a ram-air affect. If it was done by a professional body shop and done right, flawless would anyone consider it?

When I was looking at new cars last month, one of the candidate cars was the Subaru GT. Although it was a well executed and powerful car, the big "turn-off" to me was the hood scoop used to feed air to the intercooler. Although the scoop was functional, I view them like Buick "portholes". Just a personal opinion.

lol...looks like something is wrong with that skyline. I would definitely consider it but it would have to look uniform with the rest of the front. I do think however that the cars aerodynamics would be effected by a hoodscoop though cause you're letting more air into the engine bay and it acts as a resistance to the overall acceleration of the body. hmm...might be minute but could possible be an evil variable especially on the highway or drag strip

1. U drive an Acura so these questions and mods are totally expected.
2. What your talking about is not functional. The Ram Air in the Firebird feeds DIRECTLY into exposed Air filters. Since it's an old school engine with not much CPU tricks, it is basic more air=more power.
3. You will notice with Suburus and the turbo/supercharged cars, it's more about a very exposed lower grill opening to feed lots of air into the intercooler.

Different methods to engine cooling.

Thats the R34 V or M spec Nur isn't it? Looks fine to me.

Hood scoops on a TL tho, not really feeling it. Feels more ricey. I like the clean look of the hood. Unless it's feeding or cooling something, I wouldn't go for it.

Actually, this is a NACA duct - high throughput with minimal drag.

As opposed as I am to most of the mods "I've seen on TL's, a couple of these well-placed wouldn't look bad IMO.

Searched yesterday, but the pics were red X's...didn't know if it was because they were blocked at work for me or if they were truly dead links...didn't want to take the chance of posting dead links, so I figured someone else could search, see if the pics were good, and post/link if so. Search "thunderhill"...it's really not that hard.

a TL is already a really aggressive looking car... i don't see why a well placed hood scoop is such a big deal... luxury car or not, its got a decent engine and can shit and git if need be. As for the glow, if its done well, i don't think its rice.

Make sure the red glow scans back and forth, too.

I think that a regular ole hoodscoop would look very good, you would get more air intake and stuff. I think a good hooscoop would be the one tat is on the Subaru WRX STi... just a basica average hoodscoop if someone can photoshop one on, that would be awesome.

Not only is that the ugliest scoop on any car, it does the exact opposite of what we need it to do on the TL. The whole purpose is to have the air exit the engine bay not force it in on top of the motor. That would be one gay looking TL if it had that scoop on it.

I have done my research on this about 2 months ago. I actually spoke to the guy who made the Thunderhill Acura TL hood (Jeremy Lewis). He was quite helpful and honest The Thunderhill Acura TL custom made hood will NOT work for any supercharged TLs because the frame goes deep down where S/C arm holds. In other words, it bends way too deep and with a S/C TL, it doesn't have enough room. Plus a hood like that is built for pure racing. One that doesn't see rain or snow. You'll need to constantly garage that vehicle if you decide to get that hood, otherwise, the rain, snow and moisture will get under the BEND and rust a few things under the hood.

Trust me, I was all ready to buy it and have him make one for me. But in the end, nothing really interest me beside that hood.

I personallyh think the thunderhill one or whatever is UGLY. I would get one that goes above the main layer of the hood. Thats just what I like.

The only way for a "ram air" hood to be functional is to have the intake sitting in a box that is sealed with the hood, allowing a little bit of pressure built in at high speeds. I have a trans am, ram air is just a name unless you really seal airbox to the hood.
