Homelink Uses

Anyone use homelink for anything other than their Garage or Lighting. If so what, and what kind of system/accesories are needed? (searched and all i saw was entryway lighting)

I use the first button for the gate on my gated community, the second buton for the garage door, and the third button.......well, I told the wife that it's to actuate the ejection seat that she is sitting in.

Hahahahahahaha

I need to tell my wife this. She knows better but it would be funny.

It can be used with the x10 protocol, which is commonly available. See Homelink's website for more info -- http://www.homelink.com/partners/lighting.tml

www.smarthome.com is a good source for x10 products.

Ours are about 12 years old, so the gate actuator isn't that sophisticated. But it does work well with the homelick and I am happy with it. The learning process was a snap.

it would be good to have an option that would enable the homelink buttons only if a key was in the ignition, but I have yet to see this on any cars. If your is not parked in the garage itself, anyone can break you car window and hit your buttons, opening your garage and creating a security problem. be careful

But then again anyone could do that with your classic visor-remote as well... I remember people were saying not to put in their home address in the Navi for the "Go Home" feature in case someone steals your car and wants to find the loot. However, someone pointed out that the car registration -- which you keep with your car -- also displays your address!

That's why I program in my neighbor's address into my Nav for Home instead of my actual address.

Only works if they don't hit the Homelink as they drive by your place .... Also I would be careful showing that to your neighbor's husband ... he might get the wrong idea

isn't there a password feature so you can lock out all stored destinations in the nav?

Not As Good As my 02 Homelink

When I had my 02-TL, I can open the garage door from the homelink 50 feet away. Now with my 05-TL I have to drive all the way to the garage door before I can open it. So the range decreased from 50 to like 15. I wonder if there is any way to turn up the power of homelink.

Mine works from about 100 feet away from the garage door in my 04 TL. I do have to hold the Homelink button down for about 2 seconds before the signal is received. Try lengthening the little antenna on the opener unit by adding a piece of copper wire to it and experimenting with different antenna positions.

I programmed the first two buttons to open the two garage doors. The third one I have programmed to arm/disarm my house alarm. Yes, I do have a remote for my house alarm!! It is an option with ADT and it was installed for free seeing that I am an employee of ADT's parent company.
In terms of the Home address in the Nav system, I programmed the house at the end of my street which is about .5 mile away. My street is new (2 years old) and isn't on the Nav Disc we have so I didn't have an option.
In terms of range, it's kind of bizarre, but the Homelink seems to work better for me as I come down the street as opposed to in the drive way. Might have something to do with the fact that I have a "side loading" garage. By this I mean that I cannot drive right up the driveway into the garage. I have to make a right hand turn to get into the garage. So as I'm coming up the driveway, the signal is shooting into my back yard.

I have the same problem - My wife's Nissan Quest HomeLink can open the garage doors from the street, but with my TL I practically have to drive it up to the door to get it to work.
Maybe it is time for a visit to the dealer to have it checked out ?

just an intersection near your home..

Do you really think the garage door will not open if he goes near your neighbors home?

I'm thinking he's talking about the antenna on the garage door opener not on the Acura ... (you have a little wire that hangs down from the side of the motor housing).

BMW's home link are only on when the ignition is in the on position, I guess because BMW = Break My Window (or they used to be untill they put the motion sensor inside the car).

Yep, Jerky, that is the antenna to which I had reference. In the past, I found that I could increase the range of openers by adding a piece of copper wire (abt 3 ft long) to the opener antenna and either stapling it to the garage ceiling or running it vertically into the attic space. I haven't had to do it on my present opener since it works like a charm without it.

Okay, I have to admit I haven't spent THAT much time at this yet, but I've tried to program our garage door opener to our 05 TL - no luck yet.

I thought since the opener is about four years old it might be the rolling code type, but didn't find the "learn" type of button on the unit (or in the manual that came with it).

The dealer did his best to program it when we picked the car up, but that didn't work. I didn't install our wireless keypad outside the house, but I think the guy likely did have to link it to the opener before he installed it.

Any suggestions before I actually spend more than a few minutes at this over the weekend?

Get a new battery for your remote control. Even if it's able to operate the garage door opener, it may not be powerful enough to program the Homelink.

Make sure the antenna for your garage door opener unit is fully extended downward.

Have your car parked within 10 feet of the garage door.

Call the 800# for Homelink and they'll walk you through it.

greg

P.S. There's always the possibility that your Homelink in your TL is malfunctioning.

A good faq about range issues on the Homelink website.

http://www.homelink.com/home/faq.tml

I replaced the battery on my remote and reprogrammed the Acura buttons. It has increased the range significantly.

Thanks. I put in a new battery, then retrain the HomeLink. I also straighten out the wire that comes out from the opener unit. It works beautifully. Now I can open the door from very far away. :padlock:

I've noticed I have to hold the button down on the homelink longer than I had to hold down the button on my remote.

I'm not sure if it is debounce logic in the car or if it is a weaker signal or waht.

So, your not the only one. I always give a good look to make sure the door closes before I drive away.
