Hit a railroad tie

Some idiot lost a railroad tie about 2 minutes from my house, I was turning and being it was like 10 o clock pm I couldn't see it, I was only going about 10 mph but anyway I hit it. I thought I blew a tire so I went and checked it out and sure enough a railroad tie was under my car. I backed up and felt the car drop, then when I got home I noticed the plastic thing behind and under my bumper was cracked. It looks really funky now and I hope there is no damage anywhere else. Good thing I'm getting the Aspec body kit so you wont be able to see the plastic guard or whatever it is, but just another annoyance. Could there be anything else wrong with it that I should check?

I would jack it up and check the control arms, sway bar end links and anything under the plastic shroud, bottem of radiator, fans, brake lines, backing plate to the brakes
Its probaby just cosmetic but better safe than discover broken brake line later

Be glad you wernt at speed and got airborne- I have seen the results of hitting semi truck spare tire/rim at speed. Rx7s fly for a short distance inverted, I dont think the TL would do much better.

I'd take the railroad tie too. They usually have some sort of identifcation marks on them... Then you can try to get the company to pay for your damages.

Dunno if you can recover any damages through legal avenues... probably cost you more in lawyer/court fees than whatever repairs. This is what insurance is for dude... it sucks but be glad you didn't get hurt, make a claim, pay your deductible (if any) and move on.

I meant to try to go after the company's insurance. Perhaps just give all the info to your own insurance, and they'll take car of it... If you have their railroad tie, then you pretty much have undeniable proof that whoever was transporting it, didn't have it securely tied, which makes it their responsibility/liability.

Several years ago, I went through the samething when one time I was on the freeway onramp, and a toolbox from a worktruck in front of me flew out of the back, and smashed my hood/windshield. The toolbox had the company information on it, so when I filed a claim with their insurance, they pretty much had no defense.

Makes sense, although insurance law differs state-to-state. In some states, you make the claim with your insurance company and they pay it. You'd be doing them a favor by providing physical evidence since it would be up to them to initiate litigation against company x's insurance company to recover the damages.

Anyway, if he got the tie, probably best to present it to his insurance adjuster if he/she is even interested at the time he makes the claim as you pointed out.

The railroad tie was older so I'm thinking it was from a local resident rather than a business. I'll check it out on my way home tomorrow. Anyway, The only damage is the plastic part and my 500 dollar deductible wouldn't make that a good idea. The plastic part (given that's the only thing wrong) will probably only be 100-200 dollars. I'm thinking I'm just going to leave it and let the Aspec front lip cover it up. Still ticks me off though. Thanks for the responses though! Always on a good note, I can come here and get some support, emotional and knowledgeable.

heh heh, no, that's a photoshop I did a few years ago... Now that the rock chips are starting to pile up, I may look into actually getting it painted that color
