High rev makes the oil life go down by 10%

Guys,
I recently noticed that everytime I rev upto 5000 RPM my oild life goes down by 10% - is this a coincidence or is the oild life so sensitive on revs?
Also, I have probably revved upto 5K twice in two years of ownership - does it have any long term/short term negative impact on the engine?

Thank you!

I hit 5000+ RPM about 6-10 times daily.
I hit 6500 RPM about 4 times daily.
My Oil Life hits <15% at 7100 miles.

Harmful? I been doing this for the past 5 years and 65,000 miles. My motor is stronger than when it was new.

The oil life indicator uses a variety of variable to predict useful oil life. They include:

- Revs
- Temp
- Time
- Distance
- etc.

So yes, if you're approaching a change in the indicator and do some high revving, it could "tip over" to the next percentage. But it's the combination of all the variables that really matters.

I need to do this more often.

i run mobil 1, i noticed that my car will eat oil. maybe 1 quart every 3k miles, why is that? I do hammer my car often and drive it aggresive. I have been changing my oil every 3k with mobil one, and just the other day i switched to Amsoil. And btw the my car only has 35k miles on it

But why does my car eat/burn/use up oil? Is it because i "get on it?"

Sounds like your burning oil, I would have the compression checked. I burn zero oil in a 7k oil change and I have 75k on my engine most of it boosted.

To steal the words from pohljm

0 oil burned in the 65k miles of ownership, not sure whats up with yours.

Other than a leak, oil has only to ways to leave the engine. Bad ring seal (broken ring, oval shaped bore) or bad valve stem seals.

To check for bad valve stem seals, watch the exhaust outlet while someone else starts the engine after it has been sitting for an few hours or longer. If the valve stem seals are bad, there will be a puff of white smoke for a second as the engine fires-up.

Need to have a mechanic to run a compression check to check for a bad ring seal.

amazing....

every car burns oil to one degree or another (normally you should have no worries between changes, and the oil level is just topped off when it is changed)

but try burning 2.5 quarts in like 2500 miles , but then again most of that was in VTEC though

Yeah, I'm not 100% sure if it was one full quart within 3,500 miles. Ill log the data from this last oil change to make sure. Ill be running this Amsoil till 7,500 miles tho, unlike my previous 3.5k with Mobil 1. I mean i shouldn't really burn anything, right?

i would still carry a quart or so in the car, and at least check it at 3750 miles (more often preferred), and top it off as necessary

and lets just say, i know i was not doing the motor any good with doing the low oil thing, litially i was having issues with vtec engaging at higher rpms (and i say the oil light flickers a couple of times, which then i checked it , i took the lack of oil burning from before for granted, but then again i having been revving the crap out of the engine last couple of months, so everything makes sense though)

btw: i use 5w-30 schaffer full synthetic oil

and just as a reference, Subaru says it is ok to burn a quart of oil per a 1,000 miles, which if your motor did that, it would mean it would be completely out of oil at roughly 4.5k miles (and mine is actually still within those guidelines too )
