HID question

Whats up everyone. Complete newbee here as I just got my 06 TL. I want to put 8k hid lights on it but dont know if I need to purchase a complete HID kit, or do I just need to buy the bulbs so they work with the OEM ballast the car comes with.

any insight you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated.

The previous owner put fog lights on this car and I would also like to make them match the driver lights with the 8k color. Would I also just need the bulbs for the fogs as well as I am assuming he must have put ballasts for these..

For the headlights you should only need HID bulbs. However 8K is a bit bluish white and is going to cut down on the light output you get. As well it can attract unwanted attention from police officers.

I suggest you stick with a color like 5K or 6K and go with a reputable bulb like the OSRAM D2S 5000K HID's.

As far as the fog lights, it depends on what the previous owner did to match the headlights. If it's regular halogen bulbs you will need a full HID kit. If it's an HID kit already in there, you will probably need a rebased 9006 HID bulb.

You need bulbs for the headlight. D2S bulbs. 8000k is good color wise (Iceberg Blue). I have 8000k in my 5 series and it looks great. Light output is not so good. It cut down the output by 1/3 I would say. Still not bad. You can find D2S bulbs for $11 on Ebay. I have used these in Lexus cars and BMW cars in the past with no problems. All are still working currently.

For fogs depends if the car has HIDS or not. If it has HIDS find out what bulb its using and just get HID bulbs from Ebay. Should run you $15. If you are running halogen fogs then a kit will run you $34. 8000k will look great with 8000k headlights. I am running 8000k fogs in my Tl but I need to upgrade my headlights to 8000k for it to match though .

You will need to remove the bumper to install the new HID bulbs. I suggest you clear your headlights when doing so. After you clear them get WHITE led turn signals so everything up front matches .

Thanks everyone. The fog lights on my car match exactly the headlights (4300K) so Im guessing there is an HID kit on there for them, but Ill check.

Is it fairly easy to remove the bumper? wouldnt want to break anything..

Watch the video in this thread: https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-2004-2008-93/diy-video-updated-removing-front-bumper-3g-garage-e-080-a-628363/

It's supposed to be a 2 person job, but you can do it yourself by laying down some bath/beach towels under and in front of the bumper. After taking out all the screws and clips you'll be tugging on it on both sides and it'll just pop off.

If you're just installing replacement halogen bulbs, you can go in through the wheel wells, but if you're going to install an HID kit for your fog lights, you need to remove the bumper since you'll need to mount the ballasts and wiring.

thx. Also, what do you guys usually do with the halogen bulb/light that sit right next to our stock projectors? Wouldnt want that on with the hid lights and was wondering what options I may have in dealing with it? (should I simply just pull the bulb?)
