HID Information 55W and Bulb Testing 56K NO

I did this write up on HID planet a while back decided to share it over here since ive joined the TL Family. Enjoy everyone

OK so i decided to take a little time and do some testing on the FX-R from TRS. All Bulbs are brand new never been used.

Equipment used
FX-R Projector
Greddy 55W Ballast
TRS bulb Spacers
Phillips 85122+ bulb
Phillips DL50 bulb
Morimoto 4300k bulb
Morimoto 5000k bulb

The Ballast are Great. they kept a temperature at 89*F
Projector Temperatures with the following bulbs
85122+ Housing 89*- Glass 107*
DL50 Housing 84*- Glass 105*
Morimoto 4300K Housing 95*- Glass 113*
Morimoto 5000K Housing 98*- Glass 118*

The Projector is 36 Ft away From the wall. The Garage Door is 46 feet wide. I mounted the Projector to a spare Tripod so it was in a fixed position the whole time. the camera is 1 foot behind the projector. Everything is Dead center of the garage.

I spent 30 minutes trying to set up the camera to match what my eyes were seeing. the purple is actually a little more blue in it

All Images are taken with the following settings
White Balance set to 4300K
Apeture is F 3.5
Shutter 1/5 Sec
ISO 200

Off the Blackberry picture of the camera and projector setup

Parts Being Used

Now the Output Pictures. Just Resized to 1200x800. NO EDITING!!!!

First Up No Spacing at all.

1 Washer

2 Washers

3 Washers

4 Washers

Sorry about the title i didnt have a 35W ballast at the time i thought i did. these test are using a 55W ballast on its own. I have tried several HID ballast DDM, Morimoto, Greddy, Ebay brands. All but the ebay brands are a increase of lighting. but i think most of the ebay kits are still 35W kits just labeled as 55w for people who dont know the difference.

What do the washers do? They appear to be providing more foreground light. Anything else?

Also, have you had a chance to check out the Osram Xenarc 66240CBI 'cool blue intense' bulbs? I bought a pair but haven't been able to install yet. They're supposed to provide the same lumens as a 85122+ but provide 5000k (white) color instead of the 4300k (slight yellow). People on HIDplanet have been raving about these, would be interesting to see them compared to the bulbs you've already done testing with.

If done correctly it can do the following
More Output- Brighter, Wider, and more foreground
Sharper Cutoff
More color

But if too many used it can
Kill the output by giving a uneven beam pattern and create hot spots. Also can give too much foreground light which can affect the distance that the light is projected onto the road.

The DL50s are supposed to be used in airplanes. They're a 50 watt bulb and produce about 5300 lumens vs. a standard 35 watt hid automotive bulb which produces ~3200 lumens.

PLEASE NOTE!! THIS IS NOT A TL PROJECTOR IT IS A FX-R PROJECTOR.

I posted this hear to show what bulb spacers, and different bulbs can do to the output and cutoff of a HID setup.

Hi - apart from the obvious could you let me know more about how you're using the spacers?

Are they the complete circle (360 degrees) or are you using a semi-circle to move the bulb?

If I'm getting what you're saying and showing is that you can improve the foreground light output with 1 maybe 2 spacers.

I suppose it is all trial and error but any details on the spacer sizes (thickness) you've been using.

Great work by the way.

Rob.
