HID DRL's/Fogs
HID DRL's/Fogs
Hey there, I have an 06 TL and I'm looking to install HID DRL's. I had purchased new bulbs and lenses for the projectors and bought what I thought were 9006 bulbs for the DRL's but they appear to be HID bulbs, whoops lol. Figured since I got the bulbs already might as well just hook em up. Anyone done this before? Assume I just need to purchase the ballasts now?
Thanks
PS - I'm assuming most of the other posts for HID fogs are referring to "fog lights" in the bottom of the bumper, when I say DRL/Fog I'm referring to the inner most light in the headlight assembly. Which in Canada is your factory DRL but apparently called a foglight below the border.
Thanks

DRL's are 9005 bulbs.
And I'm pretty sure they are called DRL's everywhere. The earlier models have fog lights in the headlights and those are the lights located closest to the grille in the headlight assembly.

Yes thats the lights Im talking about, closest to the grill. I thought in the US 04-06 they were called fogs, and in Canada DRL's.
Here's a quote from 3G Garage #G-077:
"Fogs for 04-06 models use 9006 bulbs.
Fogs for 07-08 and Type S models use H8 (35w stock wattage).
DRLs (07-08;Type S) uses HB3/9005"
Does the '06 actually use 9005 bulbs?

They have a different function between the two versions. They are DRLs in Canada because they operate during the daytime at reduced output. They are fog lights in the US since they are designed for operation at night in the fog.
Also, what is the point of a HID DRL? A DRL is supposed to be reduced brightness and is not to be illuminated when the headlights are on.
As for which bulb? I have no idea since I have never replaced mine. I am assuming the US and Canadian models use the same bulb.

No point really, just figured since I made the mistake of purchasing the HID bulb I could just pick up a ballast and run them.
Can anyone confirm what type of bulb these are?
Thanks Mak

I have this installed in my car,i got the 5000k ones
and it matches my stock headlight color,
intially i thought it would have nasty glare
but so far it has a nice cutoff but im also
slammed tho so that might be the lil difference.

So anyone know what else I would need? Just the ballasts? I'm trying to find out but cant seem to locate the information anywhere, dont imagine to many people waste money upgrading DRL's lol. I contacted TRS and havent received a reply yet, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

The Us and Canadian models actually have different headlights and wiring.
On Canadian headlights, the innermost lights (closest to the grill) are daytime running lights, and they use a 9005 bulb. Also, the bulbs are wired in series, so each bulb gets half the normal operating voltage and runs at reduced intensity. You cannot run HIDs in these in stock form, as HIDs require a full 12 volts to operate, not the 6 volts the DRLs get. I suppose you could get them to work with a modified harness, but the glare would be extreme since the lights are DRLs and do not have a cutoff like fog lights or low beams.
On US headlights, the innermost lights are fog lights (they have different reflector optics). They take 9006 bulbs and are wired in parallel, so each bulb gets full voltage and runs at full intensity. You can run HIDs in these, but running HIDs in reflector housings is not really recommended.

Ok, I'll look into getting the same color temperature Halogen bulbs as the projectors, thank you for the clarification.
If anyone has a use for Morimoto 9006 HID bulbs let me know lol

Keep in mind since they are DRLs running at lower voltage, the color will not be what you expect. I am still not following your desire for your DRL to match your headlights considering they should never be on at the same time?
Yeah the US and Canadian headlights are subtly different on the 04-06 models. You can see in these pictures that the Canadian lights' DRL reflector is a slightly different shape than the US model's fog light reflector and it lacks the bulb shield.

^This. If you want whitish DRLs then you will have to go with LEDs (like these), since no halogen bulbs will produce whitish light at half voltage.

Basically I just want all the lights to be pure white instead of the yellowish look. I've replaced all other lights with LED ( glove, console, vanity, doors, dome, trunk, plate and reverse) and now I have ZKWR lenses and 5k Moritmotos for the headlights, all that's left is DRLs. What would you guys suggest as my best option? LED DRLs? Are there any other options?
