HELP! Might be buying a '04 TL with 162k
I am looking at a 2004 TL and it has 162k, my 02 Type s Tranny just went out. They are offering me 1500 for my car. The TL is priced at 10,999 before my trade in. What do you guys know about a TL at this mileage. I am being told all the services have been done and it has a clean title.
Im getting a lot of concern from the in-laws. I need some assurance that this car can last me 5 years.
Thanks guys.

Stay away from a car with that milage for that price and the 04 TL trans is just as crappy as the previous transmissions in the 01-03 cars

KBB-Dealer, base TL A/T in excellent condition, $10490.
KBB-Trade in value 2002 TLS Good condition $5100.
Any defects e.g. worn interior, unevenly or worn down tires, body work etc the price comes down.
If the car is in excellent condition and passes all inspections, for $9,000 plus your trade, can't go too far wrong, but no one will ever say a car will last 5 years,. This would naturally be dependent upon the annual mileage as if you drove maybe 5k per year it would probably be safe to assume a 5 years free ride, but as the mileage increases so will the probability of repairs.
As far as maintenance performed, ask them to supply documents indicating that the services have been routinely performed as this would make the go ahead decision more comfortable.
We, the family, put a great many on vehicles, some well over 200,000 and with the dedicated maintenance no one would ever dream the cars ever had that amount of mileage.
So choose wisely and let the condition speak for itself.
Guees another choice would be to get the trans fixed in the current vehicle as that would be the least expensive route to take, as long as the car is in excellent condition.
Don't want to jump out of the frying pan into the fire so to speak.

wow. not sure I would agree with their price point. I've spent a lot of time looking at used TL's across the country over the past week (going to pick up my new type-s this morning, yay!), and I've been using the prices I see as a gauge for what price point I will sell my current 2005 for - from everything I see, you shouldn't really pay more than $9500 *if* the 105k maintenance was done. So you should be looking more at something like $8k after trade of $1500
They'll never sell it for $11k - the car isn't in excellent condition. There's almost 0 probability that it is an excellent condition vehicle. Almost nothing that is 8 years old is that good.
How many miles do you drive a year? How hard do you drive your cars? If you drive a lot and you put your cars through their paces, then overpaying at a dealer for a high mileage car is not a good idea.
The TL can definitely run over 200k on the odometer, but that doesn't mean it will.
Most dealers will be listing their TL's for 2-4k above the the KBB/edmunds/blackbook guide.
Remember, a car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, just like anything else.

Don't bet on that. I've got an '04 that is in excellent condition, not a mark in/out, and an '89 with 200k all OE, that would certainly make you a believer. Some people are extremely anal about their vehicles e.g. never any car washes, no paper towels on plastic dash lens so no sctrach marks, no dust in the vents, no half down windows so no marks on glass, doors are shut by using the fingers on only the outside door handle, never in rain/snow. In fact, the '89 still has the original washer fluid in the front and rear reservoir and the original wipers. I may be the exception, but the cars are out there.

That's alittle high...I'm sure at that mileage 105k service was done.... well when buying a car, always work on price of car and trade value... that car is marked up atleast 3grand.... never accept what they are selling it for....u didn't say if this would be a cash deal? If so....offer them $7000 out the door with your trade in...money talks if they say no then walk...

i think you should keep looking.....
i bought a 07 TLS, very clean at 108 for 13k.....when i was searching i was seeing alot of TL's with 60-90k miles for around 12k, and thats the dealer...
are you paying cash? or getting a loan....its a little more work but you will save alot in the end...search cars.com or craigslist and if you dont mind driving 1-2 hours away. you should try it....dont rush into something and get buyers remorse......
my advice!

just bought an 04 with 115k, for 10 flat. Don't buy one from a dealer if you can help it.
And people who keep saying this tranny is terrible, mine with the 115k on it, never changed, is as smooth as glass. Just change the ATF every 30K and you're fine.

Talk the car down and let us know what they offer. Hell guys its nice that the dealer is even offering him anything for his car which is non-running junk as it sits.

i still think its too high! 160k give it 2 years and it will be pretty close to 200k. even thought its a acura/honda and it last long..blah blah....you still have to consider other parts that may need to be changed or fixed etc.....i would think the tires/struts etc etc are getting close to its end at that miles...
you seem like you are really close to getting it....i really think there is better out there....might spend alittle more but you wont have buyers remorse.
Who cares if the dealer is giving you 1500....you should just sell that on craigslist for maybe more or even part it if you have the time and know what you doing...

I paid $8100 for an 04 TL 6MT in Feb 2011 w/ 161k miles - very clean in an out. All services done at dealership. I have put on another 33k (now at 194k miles). I would not be concerned at all about the mileage if it was well serviced (confirm via Carfax). I had 347K on my last Accord and only sold because I was bored with it. I plan/hope to put that or more on the "new" TL.
I DO QUESTION THE PRICE ON THE CAR YOU ARE LOOKING AT THOUGH..... I am always hesitant to buy from a stealership... It sounds like they are trying to hose you on both sides (trade-in an purchase). Remember that for too many of us buying a car is emotional and we turn off our ability to do math. http://www.daveramsey.com/article/drive-free/
Best wishes!

That's really high for the mileage. I picked up a 6 speed '02 Maxima, fully loaded for $5000 this year with 154k miles. Same miles on an '04 TL with similar mileage should be about 50% more than that, so offer $7500 on the car.

What is the condition of your 02? If it's a nice, well kept and good condition car, is otherwise reliable and you want to keep it, why not get the tranny replaced and get a warranty on the tranny (some rebuilds come with a 3 year warranty), versus paying $10K or so for a high mileage car and you don't know it's history? Assuming a tranny replacement will be ~$2500-3000, it's a lot less expensive than buying a high mileage car with unknown history.
