Help? - Bounced of the redline limiter

Alright, so I'll keep it nice and short! I managed to bounce off the rev limiter this afternoon in third gear. Wasn't too bad, but I believe this was the 3rd time its ever bounced off. My question: in terms of the engine, what PARTS does this damage? Is there a way to fix or rebuild the motor to repair possible damaged engine parts? I wanna keep her healthy! Although I'm sure running her up to redline doesn't quite help, but eh...

Thanks ALL,
Eric

Hitting the rev limiter is not going to damage the engine. That's exactly what it's there to prevent. If you over-rev downshifting, that's another story.

there is nothing to worry about it, the engine just fuel cut on you TO prevent any damage, fuel cut is nothing, its overrev you should worry about.

As long as you were on a upshift (as others have previously indicated in this thread) when you revlimited you're engine is OK.

On a downshift, when the rev limiter is on no use, then you can do alot of pernament internal engine damage. In terms of that damage on too low a gear on a downshift, typically bent or broken valves, dented pistons, banged up combustion chambers.

I've never worked on a engine where a downshift caused that damage but I have worked on a friend's Integra where a timing belt broke. Very messed up engine, the many of the valves made contact with the pistons. Wound up replacing the complete cylinder head with a junkyard engine head.

Occasional bouncing off the rev limit on up-shifts, you're OK and no damage to the engine.

i did the same thing yesterday. i was at a light and there was this turd in a blazer trying to egg me on, so i popped it in to manual shift mode, turned off the VSA and took off. i got to second gear when this car came out of nowhere and made a left turn out of a gas station right in front of me, so i had to decide, rev limit second, or shift, brake, and lose my gusto. so i let it bounce for a second until they got out of my way, and then i continued my no contest win. first time i ever did that, but i knew it wasnt going to do much harm.

hm...why is that other cars don't have rev limiters? for example, a buddy of mine had an NSX a year_ish back, and man! he'd freaking taking that thing PAST redline all the time! I never really argued with him - he always said if the car wasn't MADE TO BE PUSHED THAT HARD, THEN why...have it there or something something? iono...made sense to me at the time...maybe just because it's an older car? ..the guy drives a darn 911 turbo now...08!!! rich ass...lol hope he doesn't EVER find this thread...

ANYWHO, THANKS ALL for the input; i feel at ease!!! lol I absolutely appreciate the kind info...CBR2200, enigmaos, 08WDP, rp_guy, 01tl4tl, Legend2TL, and blkaspec...thanks again

Probably every car made with a electronic fuel injection has a rev limiter, it
makes sense to limit abuse to motors. Typically most revlimiters are past the redline by a few hundred RPM.

I take my 1985 Honda motorcycle (500 Interceptor) to it's redline (12K) almost everytime I ride it, however only once in a while up to the revlimit (12.6K).
