Help with a 2005 TL

I'm in the market for a CPO TL

I just received a call from my friend at the dealership and they will be receiving a 2005 TL with 40kish miles in white on Monday. From what he told me, the car is in very good if not close to mint condition so I'm very excited to see it.

Being a first time Acura owner, could you guys me some tips on what to look for when I go? I figured this would be the best place to ask. Any info is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

Oh and the price I'm looking at will be around 15k before taxes of course.

Hopefully it will have Navigation, but not much different than any used car purchase, check CarFax for any accidents and if the dealer is going to offer it as a CPO, they will go over the car, hopefully with close scrutiny and add to the existing warranty. Check body panels for VIN and to make certain the VIN is the same, check for maintenance records, if any, along with tires for uneven wear and condition, etc.

It would be a great buy if it were a CPO for $15k, but don't think an Acura dealer would let it go that cheap, but if you have a friend, never know.

Good luck

It'd be nice, but it's ok if it doesn't. I will know more tomorrow if not when I see it what it comes with.

Thanks for the suggestions. As far as price, that is what he told me they were going to price it at. He's a good friend of mine from my high school days and he's fully aware of my situation (college student) so he's going to do everything possible for me to get the best deal available. I'm guessing by the time everything's done I'll be looking at 18kish

I've been searching for possible recalls/problems with that year model. What should I ask for when I get there?

I find extended warranties a waste of money, especially on Honda productions. Search around this forum and you'll find a bunch of people with over 100k miles and no issues, other than planned maintenance costs.

My experience has been totally different. I got 2 new side mirrors (complete housings), new starter and a new dash board all under warranty. It's already paid itself out in 90K, and if the navi drive goes within the next few thousand miles, it'll have paid twice for itself. The navi drive is 2K alone!

I'm doing that

The only point of concern I have right now is this transmission problem I've been hearing about with the 2004-2005 models. That is one thing that is making me seriously consider the extended warranty...

$800 -1200 if your dealer is good to you (ie long time customer) you might be able to get it for slightly less

I still don't understand how you can buy an Acura extended warranty once the vehicle is out of warranty? Can someone explain this?

CPO is obviously a different animal.

OP- I have 88k miles on my 05 AT TL and outside of normal maintenance I have no tranny issues.

^ they offered me extended warranty on my 02 cl-s (not acura) and they stated I could have the car serviced anywhere I wanted and it would be covered. I should have taken the extended warranty...

Yeah you better watch out if its one of those shady insurance companies though, they normally don't cover a lot of things and you have to jump through loops and hole for them to cover the stuff they are supposed to cover.

For any recalls, have the dealership run the VIN. It will show if any are needed.

It may pay for the warranty IF you have a transmission or engine failure. But, to me, if the car is in good running shape I wouldn't gamble with the warranty. I'd rather live with the chance of a catastrophy, and pay for it, then pay slightly less for a warranty.

You should just put the money you would have spend on a warranty into a savings account so you'll have it if you need it, and can keep it if your car lasts like most peoples. That's just my theory.

All good info. As for running the VIN he's going to do all of that for me. As far as the extended warranty goes, I'm definitely considering it, but price will definitely play a big part in deciding if I'm going to take it or not too.

I'm really excited to see the car(s) he has for me. This will be the "newest" car I'll own to date

I am also looking at deep green pearl color it's an 05 with navi automatic tranny. I did look it up on the carfax the dealer had provided and it looks like the previous owner had this car serviced through acura dealerships religiously. The asking price on this vehicle is like 17995 and it's a CPO what do you guys think plus no accidents one owner

Damn... what exactly failed in your transmission? That's two times too many

I went to the dealership the other day and the car wasn't there yet. I did however receive more info on the car and I'm really excited to see it when it arrives. It's not mine yet, but if everything goes as planned it will be.

It's a 2005 white diamond pearl Acura TL with ebony interior. Approximately 35-40k miles on it and I'm most likely getting the price in the OP. It's had one owner, all maintenance has been done at the dealership I went to as well. I was promised the outside is virtually flawless as well. No navi but that doesn't matter to me whatsoever. Let's hope everything goes well

The wait is killing me.

i'm glad i got the extended warranty when i bought my 04 TL AT. I had to have the transmission fixed 3 months after getting it and then 2 months later, had to get the entire power steering rack replaced.

that's really good mileage on it. I think you're going to be happy. I bought mine 1.5 yr ago (2005 with 35K miles) and I've not had any problem yet. I did get extended warranty but also think if it'll be worth it. So far I used it once to cover $300 worth of labour+parts (ABS sensor). In addition they don't refund you the diagnostic fee(only give you credit($100)). I don't like that because I hate servicing cars at the dealer.

I'm up in the air about the extended warranty. The transmissions are realiable in the '05-'08 models. If you live in a very hot climate, dashboard cracks are starting to pop up and all it would take is one dashboard crack to more than pay for the warranty. Just about every one of these failures are in hot areas.

Once you get it I highly recommend changing all fluids no matter what the previous owner has done.

Trans fluid with Redline D4 or "racing"
Engine oil with anything of your choice, preferably a good 30wt.
Coolant with OEM fluid.
Power steering with OEM fluid.

I would go ahead and replace the 3rd and 4th gear transmission switches. These will greatly extend the life of your trans and only cost $100 and about 15 minutes of your time.

In 94,000 miles other than scheduled maintenence mine has needed one headlight and a battery and I drive with the headlights on everywhere I go. It probably would've gone 200K if I only used them at night. I upgraded the brakes to larger brakes but at 90,000 miles they had over half the pad left.

White with ebony was available in 2005. Member Leedogg has that combo and many others as well. It's special order however, very few dealers opted to get it without a buyer ready.

This. Idk why anyone would buy an extended warranty!? If you're so nervous, take the +$1,000 you would spend on a warranty and put in your piggy bank. Odds are, whatever breaks ain't gonna cost more than that.

Ok if your tranny goes you're screwed...but we know that isn't going to happen if you maintain your car properly.

Edit: Let me rephrase that. We know that this probably won't happen if you maintain your car properly. The only reason you see a few horror stories about trannys on Acurazine is because pissed off people need to vent. Think about the tens of thousands of 2005 TLs on the road. What percentage had bad trannys? I'd bed its quite low.

Anybody have the statistics on tranny failures?

The extended warranty would be more for a peace of mind above anything else. I'm not going there thinking my tranny is going to give it out, but depending on the price of the warranty, it may end up paying itself out down the line. If they offer it for some ludicrous price, I will of course turn it down; but if it's fair, why not?

There's some good info for me in this thread. I really appreciate it, and I'm anxiously waiting to be called. I want this car bad

I have a question about the rear trunk spoilers. I'm not really a fan of them and from what I've read, if it's OEM the trunk will have holes in it correct? If so, can I have that taken out and have it replaced with a lip instead?

I'm not even sure if this car has one, if it doesn't I don't intend to put one on.
