Headlight Projector Lens Question

Hello,

I would like to clean my projector lens since it has collected some dust on it after 78k miles. Is there a way to get the projector out without baking the headlight and taking it apart?

Thank you in advance,
PK

Nope. Why did it collect dust? Have you opened your headlights before?

It doesn't seem like any of my headlights were open before but all headlights have this little drain opening that allows air in an out and I believe that this is how it got there. They look perfectly clean until you turn the headlights on and take a close up look. I cleaned projector lenses on my both Audis before. The nice thing was that I didn't have to remove the bumper and they had metal clips holding headlight lens with the headlight. It was so easy to take them apart and you wouldn't have to worry about breaking anything. All headlight projectors get some dust on them over time. Turn your headlights on at night and take a good close up look at your projector lens and let me know

I'd rather not look at it, just in case you're right.

Haha that is what I did yesterday when I restored my passenger headlight. I thought that my projector lenses were clean AF since the car has "only" 78k miles on it... I was wrong They perform like a champ with CBI's but now I now that they can do it even better. However I am not going to attempt it since it requires baking and then re-sealing it.

Just take the headlight out and blow compressed air into the d2s opening then..

Other than that, the only way to properly take apart the headlight is to bake and open it.

Thanks. Copressed air won't clean it. They have to be wiped down. Been there and done that two times on my Audis and there is no way you can blow it off.

I agree and wouldn't mess with them.

yeah, a little dust isn't going to affect headlight visibility kind sir, if you're being obsessive and want to clean the dust for the sake of the housing looking cleaner, that's one thing, but if you're worried about visibility or luminosity, it's not like those dust particles are getting in the way.

I'd leave them alone too

It is still going to block some of the light, I know that from my personal experience. Here is what I mean:

I pulled this picture from the internet. You can't notice that dirt until you turn the light on or take the light apart.

no way your projectors have a FILM of dirt on them... you said dust at first.

Also consider this: if the Audi's were easy to take apart, chances are that's how the dust/dirt got in in the first place

you're more than welcome to bake them if you want to actually clean them, but i think there are bigger issues you'll deal with on the car and it's not worth the time for a few microns of dust...

That seems excessive -

Maybe it's not sealed the same way as the TL's headlights are?

You are right, there is no point of doing it now. That picture is just a reference picture. Mine don't have that much dust/residue or whatever it is called so I will pass on it
