Havoline 5w-20 SM/GF-4 Virgin Oil Analysis

This is a Virgin Oil Analysis of the new Havoline 5w-20 SM/GF-4. I posted in the second column a Virgin Oil Analysis of the new Havoline 5w-30 SM/GF-4 as well for the sake of comparison.

Special thanks to Mark Mathys of Butler-Machinery for adding this sample to the Bobistheoilguy.com Virgin Oil Analysis Library!

A trace of anti-freeze in normal to find in a Virgin Oil Analysis. Nearly all have it.

Michael

Mod Edit: Hey! What about good ole XP who bought the oil and sent it to Mark??

Thanks Michael -- the additional 5w-30 column helps!

Okay, so who can interpret this for us? Does this mean I should go and return my 5w-30 Havoline that I bought from Walmart?

It's your choice.

Wouldn't be a bad idea if the 5w-30 you bought wasn't SM/GF-4.

The 5w-30 is SM/GF-4. I'm mostly concerned about the mileage loss, if any.

I got the oil at Advance/Discount Auto Parts. It was on sale for $12 a case (12). I bought a case for my oil vault stash. Then, I got 2 extra quarts so that I had enough for 3 complete oil changes. $1.28 per quart individually. Best deal in town.

Lore: You MAY experience a loss of mileage in the neighborhood of 1 MPG. That's what happened to me with 10W-30 Mobil 1.

For those who are wondering what all that stuff means in the oil report, look here:

I don't think we have an Advance/Discount Auto Parts around here... but I am thinking of taking the oil back and getting some 5w-20 for mine, especially since it appears that the 5w-20 has a lot more additives!

My family's 99 Accord takes 5w-30 though, so might be worth keeping a little around.

I think that chain is called Kragen (or something like that) on the left coast.

Ah yes, Kragen's. They discontinued Havoline for some reason.
