Has anyone modded their projectors?

SO, i was talking to my friend who owns an SRT4 and discussing HID's. He was then telling me how on the retrofit market, the TL's are the highest demanded projector He told me about color modding and foreground enhancements, went right over my head. He then told me to register at hidplanet.com and search the forums and look what i have found:

http://www.hidplanet.com/forums/view...er=asc&start=0

This seems to be quite easy and noticable mod. I am def going to try it, hopefully this weekend.

Has anyone else out there done this to their projectors?

Hmm, If I was clearing the headlights I would likely do at least the color mod. I am confused as to what it actually does though. It appears it makes the cutoff line blue, and the projectors appear bluer from head on, is that all?

Also, what is the forground mod they are discussing? Is that unnecesary if you have the bi-xenons with the shudder?

Mike

The color modding seems to change the cutoff beams from a thin multi color line to a thick solid blue/purple hue. No reduction in output at all. It will def make the projectors look blue when looking at them from alot more angles.

The foreground mod increases the light thrown onto the foreground infront of your car. When that piece is cut, there is no restriction and light now spills out. I dont know how it would affect the bi-xenons, it will prob have to be seen during disassembly.

I am def going to color mod, and will see about the foreground mod

Glad to see interest, i am surprised one of us didn't figure this out

It's an alright mod, especially for being free Honestly, it wasn't worth the trouble for the foreground light, since you can't really see that area while driving. The color mod was def. worth it, and you can do it without taking the entire light apart

I am going to clear my lights this weekend coming up and wanted to know if any one has done the color mod on there TL. If they have, Are there any negatives to do this? What is the original reason of having the black ring there that you are removing?
Thankyou
Brian

did you have to disassemble the headlamps to remove the projector or can you do it with the projector in place? looking at some images, it looks like i can stay in one piece

i did the color mod to mine. you do not need to open the housings to do it. all you need to do is remove the headlight from the car, and remove the bulb. from there you take a tiny flathead screwdriver, and push the plastic peice. it will fall into the housing. turn the housing over, and the peice falls to the floor

Yep, same method I used. To get the foreground mod done, you do have to take the projector out of the housing, and that's a real PITA. I broke 2 headlights trying to get the projector out

I just wanna say that i did both of it and only the color mod is nice , the foreground did not work on our TL because the lens is too far in it will reflect on the chrome housing and reflected up causing glare to other driver plus you got some light leaking above the cutoff. Once you cut out the top part of that piece you will never turn back .I think if you paint the chrome housing anround the len with black itmight work . Now my light is not bright as before dont know which mod cause it.

It was definately the foreground mod that killed your light output. If you read the thread at the begining he does state that the foreground mod DOES decrease overall light output. IMO, i think that the shield was specifically designed for the TL's housing and the shield mod would only work on a retrofit where the projector was higher in a housing and not tucked back so far.

I just did the color mod tonight and love the results! It cleans up the cutoff and gives a very S2000 look, but with bi-xenon!

I also installed my 6000K HID 9006 foglamps and they have crazy light output as well. The combination looks sick when the car is oncoming.

encrypted03, judging by your avatar, it looks like you changed your fogs to 6000K HID's, am I correct?

rbf351, thanks for the tip, it worked out well when popping out the piece.

Kevin 36You can probably use JB Weld to connect the piece you cutoff you shield as long as you didnt hack it up too bad.

So the only mod that is worth doing for our 3rd GEN TL is to take the rubber stopper out correct?? Cuttting the upper shield will do nothing for our TL but lose light output correct?? Just want to make sure when I get a chance to do this mod.

it is def worth the small amount of effort. it is free and takes about 5-10 min. to increase your colorband if you already have the headlights out. NO BRAINER!

Hey ding069, where did you get the fog lamps. Was it as easy as just changing the bulbs out?

They are essentially a McCulloch 6000K 9006 HID plug and play kit. I purchased them on ebay for my X5 utilizing H3 bulbs. I kept the ballasts and decided to use them with the 9006's in our fogs and couldnt be happier. HUGE increase in light output, the seem to be even brighter than the oem lowbeams.
NOTE: Those pics make the fogs look WAYYYYY bluer than they actually are. They are white with a tinge of violet, for some reason the cam makes them and their output look very blue. The projectors are preatty much true to color tho.
