Unhappy Hailstorm - 1, TL -0

Well, just got back from a nice dinner. While there, though, a very fast-moving storm blew through, complete with hail bigger than golf balls. We thought the roof of the restaurant was coming down.

Turns out the hail was on the northeast side of a tornado about a mile or so from where we were sitting, so it could have been worse. But the TL is covered with pock marks. There isn't a quarter panel that isn't dinged pretty badly.

Don't know what they'll do about this, but I guess I'll be calling on Sate Farm first thing Monday morning.

*sigh*

Thanks for the sympathies, guys. This is a leased car, less than 9 months old, so I'm going to be interested in seeing what they do with it.

I know they can get some of the dents out with a torch, but I don't know about this many ...

Not good news, sorry to hear, I know how you feel, My super clean TSX was blasted a while back while at Acura in SA over night.... They use paintless dent repair (PDR) now for most of this stuff...(from under the dent they worry it out with a tool)...they will replace trunk or hood etc if too much damage...if cut and replace needed that is bad...just no good way out of it. Good Luck...

Wow! What do you do for that? Prevention-wise I mean? I guess park overnight in a garage? That sucks! I actually thought about this when a little hail came down here. About whether or not it would dent the ride I mean.

I know it sucks, but can you post some pics please? Before and after.

Good luck!

Well, it's really hard to photograph hail damage, since the dents show up best when they're on the edge of the shadows. But here are a few quick attempts:

It actually looks worse in person than in these pictures, but these are the best I could do on short notice.

I had a similar experience some years ago with my '93 MB 400E; also State Farm insured. After the hail storm, State Farm sent an examiner and wrote me a check for the value of a repaint. Then I took the car to a paintless dent removel place, the Dent Wizard. I picked up the car the following day and could not detect the repairs from any angle. The restoration was remarkable and I did not have to deal with the disadvantages of a repaint. The cost of the paintless removal was less than State Farm's check so I pocketed a few bucks to cover the inconvenience.

Investigate paintless dent removal in your city!

I believe wet towels on the roof and hood can help lessen the damage. I suppose a quilt/comforter would work as well.

Of course both of these are assuming you're someplace where you can actually get to towels and blankets i.e. not at a restaurant.

I suppose your S.O.L. there

Sorry to hear about the ride. I'm in MS and I was shitting bricks afraid this was going to happen to me. Good luck with the bastard insurance people.

Thanks Leviathan! But I can see the neighbors laffin at me while big ass golf-sized hail pound me into submission as I try to put a comforter on my ride...I think I may wind up using that for my goddamn self! Hahahahahahaha!!!

Nope - the agent's office was closed today, so I'll have to wait until Monday to report it and get something set up. Trouble is, I'm leaving town Tuesday for vacation, so the repairs will have to wait 'til I get back anyway.

Sorry dude. It definitely sucks. Good luck on getting it fixed.

Bretallica, you flipped out with a small chip on your wheel. I can't imagine what would happen if this happened to you. You'd probably have a heart attack and pass out.

I'd say that's a pretty accurate statement. I really don't know how I'd handle it. Just take that rim scenario and multiply it by like five million.

After having about $2500 in hail damage to an RX-7 about 12 years ago, I've learned to keep track of which malls have parking garages.

I spent about an hour in the one at The Parks Mall in Arlington on Friday night.

Thanks again, guys. It's just a car and I'm not gonna get crazy about it. Everyone tells me they can fix this stuff so well you can't tell it ever happened, and that's what I buy insurance for.

Unfortunately, it will be a couple of weeks at least before I'll know much. We'll be out of town next week, and when I get back I figure there'll be a waiting line at the body shops since this was so widespread.

As I said before, it will be interesting to see how well they can fix this, and I'll let you guys know.

my car got hailed on a couple weeks ago i believe arlington.. i called my insurance (Farmers) and they scheduled an appointment for an adjuster to look @ it... the estimate came out to about 3k dollars.. so they cut me a check rite on the spot for 2500 because i had a 500 dollar deductible.... i dropped it off @ one of my buddies shop because he knows a guy who does (PDR) paintless dent repair.. it was completed in 2 days.. when i saw it.. i was amazed.. it was as if nothing happened.. and the best part is.. he charged me less than what the estimate was.. so.. i got some money back in my pocket... but one thing that sucks was.. while my car was in the shop getting the hail damage repaired.. i had a rental.. and then last week (friday 13th) my rental got hailed on... luckily it was only like 5 dings.. my car had over 700.. geesh.. what luck.. so now i'm getting the rental repaired b4 i return it... sucks..

oh.. btw Mike_TX .. if you live close to arlington... send me a message and i'll get you in touch w/my buddy to get yours fixed..

Sent you a PM. Arlington's not far. Your car had over 700 hail dents??? Wow!

And you DO have bad luck ... more hail damage while the first one's getting fixed. Jeez.

Well, just got back from the State Farm catastrophe center ... the verdict is $5,249.17.

The adjuster said the hood and trunk are just too hammered for PDR, so he factored in replacement of both, with paint blending down all four fenders. The roof is bad, too, but he says he thinks they can drop the headliner, pull the sunroof, and get good access to the underside and get it looking fine.

I'm not thrilled about replacing major pieces and having to do the the paint thing. I plan to try several places that do PDR and see if they think they can fix things without going that far.

I have this feeling I may be getting it fixed as well as I can and trading it ...

(Duplicate post in the RL forum.)

DIY minor dent repair with hairdryer/canned air

This do it yourself technique might work for occasional dimples, though the hail damage looks too severe for this approach.

Heading out this afternoon for estimates from some good repair places. The car is leased, so I need get it fixed right if I end up keeping it.

With the number of hail damaged cars in this area, the problem is going to be getting in ... I'm sure most shops are booked for weeks.
