I was hinting at the possibility of errors in the calculations. If it's averaged over 10 or more tanks, I'll believe it. If it's just a few, cutoff point can come into effect.

99% of the MPG threads on here fall into one of the 2 following categories:
  1. My TL gets terrible MPG. Turns out that the OP does a lot of city driving.
  2. My TL gets awesome MPG. Turns out the OP does long highway stretches. (Like myself.)
Both kinds of threads are valid and yet people seem to get emotionally charged one way or another.

That's my point. If they only searched we wouldn't have all of these repeats. 99% of the time it turns out there's nothing wrong with the car, it's just the type of driving they do. Just throwing out there that you do city or highway does not mean anything. There can be a significant average mph and mpg difference with different types of city driving.

If you notice, in the older threads there was a lot more technical info and even surveys of driving style, average mph, etc. Now it's just a few people throwing little tidbits of info that you can't really draw any conclusions from.

You inevitably will get one person claiming some crazy mpg like 43mpg leaving out valuable facts. You'll get someone claiming crazy gains from an oil change, air filter change, valve adjustment, etc. It's the same old stuff over and over again.

hax. The best I've gotten is 26 mpg. And that is after an oil change, fuel injector cleaner, recently aired up tires.

If you notice, there are a ton of these threads and most of them started when it got cold. It's the winter fuel, nothing else. Your mpg will come back when they switch back over during the summer. Besides fuel, type of driving has a huge impact. As I say in every one of these threads, your mpg follows your average mph very closely. Look at your average mph and then search for the thread with the mpg vs mph and I bet yours falls right in the middle.

Air filter has no effect on mpg.

haha im still a student who just switched from a fuel-friendly scion xb 05 to the TL 05 and i expected the gas to be a problem. Turned out its not too bad, fill up would be about $45, mixed driving with 60-75% locals, and before it hits E i would get about 230 miles to the tank. Average 13 gallons = 17mpg. When im on freeway the meter always says 30+, once i even got 36 mpg but i dont think any of it is accurate. OH well =).

Same here and this was a total MPG starting in Sacramento, driving to San Diego (about 9 hours away), driving around San Diego, and then driving back up to Sacramento. The whole week's worth of this only netted me 26 MPG. But SD is a pretty hilly place, so I had some fun on those roads. Still thought I'd do better, though.

On a regular tank, I'll get around 22 MPG, 23 if I'm lucky. . . . This is with probably 75-80% freeway driving, too.
