Gear Grinding..

I know gear grinding is bad...but actually how bad is it...

When I have the music on loud and not paying attention, I tend to grind going from 1st to 2nd or from 2nd to 3rd...especially since it's a lot harder to get into both of those gears...

what can I do besides concentrating more...and what is actually happening when I'm grinding those gears...can it be fixed...how much?

Also, I feel like the gear grinding is causing my gear box to feel a bit more loose when in the gear and in neutral...

i'm scared for my TL...

help me...

Also, if I switch to GM Synchromesh Friction-Modified tranny fluid...can this be done at the dealership? do i need to buy it and bring it in or would they have some?

thanks..

Its pretty bad. What is happening is the gears are not fully enguaged( I think I raped that word) so one is spinning and barely touching the other, crinding down the teeth. Eventually you will either have a jam due to metal filings or your gears will bald.

How long have you been doing it? At this point I would change the fluid cause there is prolly a crap load of metal in there. If it fails you will need a new tranny or an overhaul.

Yup, metal shavings and maybe pieces will trap the tranny and eventually you will not be able to use car unless the grinding stops. A way you can stop grinding is to rev just a LITTLE too much, and I mean a LITTLE (very tiny, small, minute etc.) and then later on you should catch on and hit perfect low end rpm to shift.

it wears down ur synchro's. when they get bad enough, ur gears will grind even when u are using ur clutch correctly.

learn how to drive. music on or off, you should be able to drive without problems. imagine going into a 110 degree turn from a long straightaway and u have to slow down and downshift from 5th to 2nd and ur heeltoeing all through the turn with someone on your tail hugging you. are going to to misshift 2 gears in the middle of the turn?

if u feel like buying a new tranny in 2 years..just keep driving how ur driving.

haha...it's not like i want to grind gears....it just happens that's why I'm trying to find a way to prevent it....also cause 2nd and 3rd are kinda harder to get into than the other gears....but I just bought myself the GMFM or whatever lube...hopefully it'll come soon and protect my gears better...

What exactly do you mean "hard to shift into 2nd from 1st and 3rd to 2nd"?

if wears down you synchros and not your gear teeth. with modern day tranny's you do not risk grinding the gears. the synchros synchronize the speed of the gear before it engages. so most likely what is happening is that the teeth of the synchros are grinding. if you wear the synchros out then the tranny will start to have trouble synchronizing each gear. only way to fix this is to replace all the synchros which is a tranny rebuild. so like what mos people are gonna say take you time and be more careful.

If you're shifting properly, it shouldn't be hard to hit any gear. When the transmission is cold in my S2000, the first couple shifts out of first are more difficult, and it feels like a grind, but it's not.

A simple palming of the shifter is really all it takes to find the next gear. The gearstick finds the next gear pretty well with your guidance, just don't force it. When I first learned to drive stick (which coincidentialy was my S) I kept trying to force the shifter, and I could never hit 3rd gear. I'd go from 2nd to 5th constantly.

I know some of you gearheads like to troubleshoot cars but wtf bring it back to the dealer and see what they say. Driving it and mucking around with it only is considered owner abuse to the dealer. Take it in and see what they have to say about it.

I was guilty of the grinding on occasion, especially when going from 1st to 2nd on a turn. I have done it maybe about six times since I have had the car from last november. 6500 miles on it now. It always happened on the SAME turn it seems. I just had to start to force myself to REALLY concentrate when going from 1st to 2nd; the car is so smooth its easy to be absent minded and forget to fully engage the clutch. Strangley enough I had no problems with the Mustang clutch even though you almost HAVE to ram it to the floor.

crazymjb, do you think I need to change out my transmission fluid too?

If there appears to be an actual problem with the 6MT, DO NOT switch to an aftermarket lube. Change the fluid with Honda MTF and have the dealer check the transmission.

If your 6MT is NOT mechanically sound, changing it to an aftermarket lube is only setting yourself up for hassle, in case they pull a sample of the fluid before replacing the transmission.
