Gas mileage
Gas mileage
how accurate is the gas computer on TL.
i have 07 TLS and my avg mpg is 20 and its suburbs driving and i rarely get on it. i always use premium gas usually shell or bp. filter and oil changed promptly have 45k miles. tire pressure 37 front 34 rear. trunk is empty.
20 just seems low to me. what are you guys averaging?

Don't be afraid to use the search function.

another gas mileage thread....this is like the nth one in the last month. yes, mixed driving will yield you on avg 18-20 mpg. please use search. you will find the answers you seek.
jeez we need to have section for the forum where questions are welcomed. Its forum thats how it works people ask questions. those who feel like can answer. no harm no foul.
when i searched MPG got threads on CAI, jpipe, etc
if anything i helped you guys get your post count up... you're welcome for that.

yeah this is a forum and you are allowed to ask questions...but the exact same question you asked has been covered countless times and if you just scroll through a few pages...you'll find them. i searched "mpg" and "gas mileage" and got plenty of threads to look through.
i've had tons of questions about stuff but if i search first, 99% of the time i will find my answer. this car has been out for 7+ years so i'm pretty sure everything has been covered at least once on this forum.
ibtl.
i've been in some pretty strict forums too. But after visiting Acurazine where similar if not same questions have been posted when the original one was still on the front page, it's pretty annoying.

just giving an opportunity for folks to raise their post count. clearly you can ignore the topic but everyone needs to come in say "search"
sodaks2k already stated that and answered question. everyone after that is just post whoring.

it has nothing to do with post counts or whoring. yes this is a forum for questions, but honestly repeat questions can be frustrating to current members who have been on here a while. try different search terms and you will find your answer. i've used the search function and have found many an answer to questions or curiosities i have had without reposting about the same topic. as someone else has mentioned, the TL has been out for 7 yrs...lots of stuff has already been discussed. just be persistent in your search terms and narrowing it down to the 3G TL. you'll find a lot of answers.
so yes you are more than welcome to pose questions on the DISCUSSION forum, but please look first. the answers may already be out there.

My trip computer is accurate with my math calculations (dist/gals). The TL is a heavy car with a 6 cyl engine, it's not going to get the gas mileage of a 4 cyl econo-box.

I hate when I search stuff and end up reading a thread from 2007 that doesn't necessarily cover the fact that my car was 3 yrs old when the post was written, whereas now it's 7 yrs old. I used to moderate a fitness forum and questions were encouraged, even if it's already been asked before, it builds conversation and friendships on the board amongst the current members.

Speaking of search. I have posted in many of these MPG discussions and have contributed to this issue from various angles. Try this search and you'll see a number of MPG related threads: lacostaracer mpg
You'll see threads about the MID being very accurate, a formula for figuring out gas mileage based on speed- intended to explain expected MPG based on the MID's average speed. There's lots of information here.
I understand the comments about old threads but with MPG, studies from Consumer Reports have shown that 10 year old cars get very close mileage to what they were new assuming they have been maintained. So any arguments on the age of a past thread are not very strong.

I generally get 23 if I go easy on it. But if I drive "pushy" it'll easily get to 20.
Is your car manual or automatic? 37 & 34 sound a little high, even if it was manual.
As a sidenote I agree with rebelangel completely. If you don't want to answer move on to the next thread no one is forcing you.
And my 10year old toyota camry had gas mileage 5mpg less than it was new.

20mpg is just about right where the TL-S should be with suburban driving. Thats actually pretty good I think! My 07 TL-S automatic averaged 19-20ish in the far Chicago suburbs. For reference my 00 Lexus ES300 averages 23mpg (90hp less), my 06 Z06 vette averages 19mpg (220hp more lol), my wifes V6 Accord sedan averages 22mpg (46 less hp). I just thought I would throw this out there as this is what I averaged on all my cars that have been driven exactly the same. The TL-S is right where it should be for its weight and HP.

My base TL got 29 mpg calculated at the pump. 29 displayed on MID. I was quite surprised.
And post count means nothing to me..but i'm pretty new to Acurazine so I dont know the culture. IMO, someone can have a few thousand posts and still be noob/uneducated.
Other forums have a rep system that is much more effective.

^ with 4.00 gas, I would expect to see many threads like this so get use to it.
I just entered my data at www.fueleconomy.gov. I have been doing this since the car was new and started correlating MID calculated mileage to actual since 7/2008 so I have a bunch of data. I can say the following:
1. The TL is very consistent in MPG based on Average speed. My browser has the 'MPH=XX;MID=YY' text cached so when I type 'MPH=26' the browser finds 'MPH=26;MID=18' which corresponds to what my receipt says. If my MPH=31, then I have a MID/MPG of 21. I can see in 3.5 years of data that these values are consistent.
2. The MID is VERY accurate based on actual MPG- usually within .5 MPG. I just looked at my data and there have been only 2 times (out of 70+ entries) that the MIDs calculated MPG was off by more than 1MPG. This error tends to happen at higher speeds and MPGs mostly. For my urban commute, the MID is dead-on.

Last weekend I drove from Colorado to Texas and back, almost 1,100 miles and the car told me I averaged 35 mpg on 91 gas. I've calculated the gauge to be consistently 9% off, so ~32 mpg; going the speed limit sometimes pays off.

thank to others for helpful responses.
Pictures are worth a 1000 words:
Here's a photo of my MID while tank was getting filled a couple days ago:

Here's a photo of my data- notice how accurate the MID actually was on the 3/10 entry: 21.6 .vs. calculated 21. The MID is usually closer than that even but you have to give a break since it only displays integers so it will have +/- .5 error do to that alone.

Look how accurate all the other entries actually were- that is not bad!

My first tank of gas with this car (just filled it up for the second time) I averaged 25.9mpg's with about 70%highway. Just under 90k and I'm quite certain the other owner did not changw the spark plugs. They looked quite used, and I didn't see anything in all of the service records I have. Not sure if I'll see much change, but I can always hope.

Went to Vegas for Spring Break this past week, and even though we were on the highway 75% of the time (with plenty of stop and go driving on the strip), my TL got incredible mileage, according to the MID:

I took this last night as soon as I pulled into my parking spot.

what do you guys consider mixed driving ? I averaged about 240 miles per tank/week and i go on freeway like about 30 miles. the rest all local street. My mpg was 17/18 and after tune up ive been getting 19/20. is that normal then since i mostly drive city ? i have a light foot .
IN all honesty the search engine on the forum down right sucks ASS. I mean that in the most polite way. But there is a way around it. If you type your question into Google search, lets say " DIY change spark plugs on 2008 TL" It will take you to the exact page you want or many others.
I find this way to be the best when trying to find threads i know are on here.
Besides that i would change air filter/plugs/oil/ and lower your air pressure to the factory settings. I think its 35 front 32 rear.
