Gas Mileage on 5AT?
Gas Mileage on 5AT?
I've done a few searches to see what other people are getting, and I seem to be falling a little short in my average for daily driving. Once the general excitement of the new car thing wore off, I went from about 70/30 spirited/non driving to generally really light driving. I was getting what I thought were great averages on roadtrips, 25-28 mpg with a 75mph average and around 18 when I started to get into more city driving than highway. In my latest tank I've been seeing 13-15mpg on the MID in very light city driving. I'm driving down to San Diego tomorrow, so hopefully I'll see some better averages on the freeway, but I was curious, what are other 5AT'ers getting and what's your usual driving style?

I mentally calculate the mpg each time I fill the tank, and the MID is always very accurate.

Have you checked your tire pressure recently? I usually get about 29-30 on the freeway and then it'll drop down to about 21-23 when I combine it with a lot of stop and go city driving. I have 16,000 miles on the car now.

This car ("04TL) is the strangest car I've owned. When I drive on the highway at a steady 65-80MPH, I get around 29MPG. When driving around town at an average 30MPH, my mileage drops to the low 20's. Why such a drop in mileage with city driving? All my previous cars would drop a few MPG, but nothing like this vehicle does driving in city traffic. It's no big deal because I think the car still gets good mileage for a luxury sedan, but it sure is strange that it drops so much around town. 70-80MPH seems to be the speed this car loves the most...and I do too!!
Well today's trip made me happier. On the way down to San Diego, my Avg. MPG slowly rose to 25. I reset the info as I was getting on the freeway and, with an average speed of ~67mph I achieved 35mpg.
I've had my TL for 10 months and have a little over 10,000 miles on it. Average highway MPG is 33-34. Average city driving MPG is 23-24. A/C (auto) has been on the last 6 weeks, but not before. Cruise control on the highway where feasible (have about 25% of my total driving is highway) and go around 70 or a little over.
I have a 05 AT A-Spec. 4200 miles, give or take 50.
In my city driving I get anywhere between 14-17 MPG depending on my mood. A lot of hard accel at times. Lately its been staying near 16~18 MPG.
When I take late night drives to get gas out of the city, 28-31 MPG doing 70-90 MPH.

Now I'm back at city and mileage is horrible. 16-18MPG. Going to grocery store makes me feel bad especially with A/C on. Everytime I turn the car on, I seem to lost 1/10th of tank(just feels like it, not a leak)
05 desert mist 5at
my gas mileage has been nothing short of disappointing so far. Ive had the car about a month and i usually only get around 230 miles per tank of gas. in fact, i gassed up two days ago and was down to almost a half tank barely 90 miles. with any luck, i hope i get the kind of mileage that you guys are getting
the MID says 17MPG so far in my first 3000 miles (5AT)
but i drive it using sport shift all of the time, rpms between 3000-5500..
i havent even attempted to drive "normal" yet, its just too much fun

My wife's '05 automatic averages around 24 for back and forth to work and other suburban and city driving. On the highway (speeds up to 75), it manages 31.25 MPG.
My '04 6MT gets 27 for to and from work driving (most is in city and suburban - about a 60/40% mix), and 32 on the road with A/C on auto and speeds at 62 MPH.

Highway all the way... 60~75 MPH
I ever had 507 miles a tank on the highway last July... not sure if it's the best MPG I've ever had, but it's the longest distance I've ever driven by one tank.

6MT, at 6th gear
55MPH = 38MPG
65MPH = 34MPG
75MPH = 31MPG
85MPH = 27MPG
95MPH = 24MPG
105MPH = 21MPG
Has anyone done similar testing on a 5AT?
The best I have done is 34 MPG for 400 miles from LA to SF.
I've had my 04 TL since last September and have 11,000+ miles on it now. My average MPG on the highway is 33-34 and my average in town/city is 23-24. I use 93 octane (until recently, when I've switch to 89 -- hard to mentally pay over $2.50 per gallon). I'm also pretty light on the accelerator. Plus, I run the A/C on auto and always try to hold off on using A/C until absolutely necessary.
I live pretty close to you so we drive the same highways. Cruising down to Miramar two weeks ago the MID was showing 31 mpg. With some short city driving rolled in, the trip averaged 29 mpg. (Mine is a 5AT)
In mostly city driving, I'm getting about 22 mpg. Yes, I have a pretty light foot unless I really need to scoot, like geting on a freeway.
I also have found the MID to be pretty accurate. Can't imagine what your problem might be unless the fuel injection system/computer is off calibration. That should be easy for your Dealer (South Coast?) to check.
Good luck.

I drive to work everyday. Downtown Seattle traffic is one of the worst I guess!. I drive at least 30 miles round trip in 30-40mph highway traffic. I still get at least 21-23 mpg. Highway mpg on roadtrips is about 29mpg. When I first got the car I get 17-19mpg but after 2000 miles, its been consistent at 21-23 city driving.
'04 5AT, with 27.7K miles, on the stock B'stones, I was getting like 30-31 in highway driving anywhere from 55 to 80 (as traffic allows), with bursts to 90 when frustrated by nitwits
! On roads with lights I was doing low 20's. Accel from stop is high teens unless I take it really easy -- which, of course, is no fun at all in this car. Overall was about 25/tank, with a pretty even mix of highway/suburb, and I usually drive to maintain decent mileage but still would go fast and zip around idiots.
Since I changed tires to the P-Zeros a couple weeks back, the mileage has dropped for sure, about 1 or 2 mpg. Probably higher rolling resistance of stickier tread compound. Even on highway after reset with less than 10 miles logged, it's hard to get to 28 mpg readout in a 15-mile trip where the same feat was easy before.
But it's cool -- I'd never go back to the Turanza's. $2.84/gallon today, Anne Arundel County, MD. Sheesh.
