Gas Gauge is way off

Tonight I was driving home when the orange "low fuel" light came on. I checked the computer and it noted that I had 30 miles until empty left in the tank. I stopped at the nearest gas station and was only about to put in slightly over 12 gallons before the pump clicked off.

The specs say that the car has a 17.5 gallon gas tank. Is my sending unit in need of replacing? It seems that I could go a lot farther than 30 miles on 4 gallons of gas (and that I really had almost 1/4 of a tank left even though the gauge read nearly empty).

Thoughts?

I know in some cars the gas meter takes a while to get an accurate reading. I can't speak for the TL because I don't have mine yet, but in my mother's BMW 5 series it will read out as like a 30 mile range, and then slowly climb to like 60 or 70.
