Gas consumption question.

Hi,
Ive had my TL for about 2months. I used to have a 06 Accord (4cylinder) and I have noticed a HUGGEEEE difference in the gas consumption between the two cars. I know the TL is heavier and is a bigger engine so I anticipated a difference, but this is insane! I go through a full tank almost weekly, and I drive 3miles to work and 3 miles back. The only time I really drive a lot is on weekends when I go out in the town but for the most part i drive under 8miles a day. I know the spark plugs and your driving speed all makes a diff, but I really dont drive fast since here in Miami theres ALWAYS traffic. Any other ideas as to what this could be? I also have driven a few Suvs and neither wasted as much gas a my car. So Im just looking for any little help here! Thanks.

BTW I checked other threads to see if I found anythign on this topic and could find anything...so sorry if this has been asked.

In order for us to help you, you need to provide more details.
Currently, what is your mpg?

Driving in city will give you the worst mileage ever. you said theres always traffic, so that could be your culprit.

I just checked my MPG and it says 19 which is what the car should be doing, and I also saw my Avg. MPH was 20, so go figure how slow I drive. The traffic I go through is NOTHING compared to the real Miami traffic. I meant to say that theres always a lot of cars on the roads so theres no way I can speed, unless I drive @ 4am. I guess I just have to get used to the fact that this car is going to waste more gas. Thanks for your help, I'll see what else I can do to improve gas consumption....

19mpg is not bad at all for pure city. What were you expecting?

I drive my TL in all city. and I get 17-19mpg.
throw in alittle highway commute and you'll see your mpg skyrocket.

you're coming from a 4cylinder, and the bigger engine is just doing its job.

^ he hasnt given details about his car, his car could have 20k miles on it, which would NOT need seafoam, IMO.

Average MPG is directly related to average MPH. Yours is fine. When my average mph was 16 my mpg was 13.

It's a 3,500lb car so there's just not a whole lot you can do.

Seafoam cures cancer.

lol.

To the OP - 19-21 mpg is about normal for city driving, and if you're only averaging 20 mph, it's probably normal.

Another thing you could consider doing (which worked on my 03 rsx type s) is to start modding the exhaust and intake a little. I used to get around 30 average before I did anything to my car. Then I installed a freer flowing exhaust, an intake, and a new intake manifold. My average went up to over 33.

I have heard a new J pipe and 3rd cat delete nets around 1-3mpg in our cars due to the lack of restriction.

Now you will only see gains if you can keep from romping on the car once you start freeing up some extra horsepower which can be pretty darn difficult.

TL-S here, and only get around 15-18mpg. I drive 5 miles to work and 5 miles home. No highway. Barely get over 200 miles a tank on her and it hurts. Worse than my 350Z I had. But when I took it on the highway, I saw 28mpg. Hope to go over 30 mpg when I go to Nashville in 3 weeks.

I would say so. I got 13mpg averaging 16mph and that was driving it very easy doing lots of coasting. Look at it this way, your mpg is higher than your mpg lol. I guess the crossover point is between 9 and 16 mph.

I am not complaining even if my car were to get 10 mpg in the city lol I owned a 8 mpg gas hog before the TL I did drive to Tampa today from TN, which is about 590 miles, and according to the MID I avged 32 mpg at 77 mph.

Probably, especially in the city. It seems like the weight affects mpg more in city driving than on the highway. Maybe that's why the TL is barely average around town but the aerodynamics and efficient 11:1 engine help it to get very good mileage on the freeway.

Though I have a strange feeling Inaccurate could possibly have a heavy foot lol. I bet that car is capable of Civic mpg numbers in city driving.

ya what year is your car? how many clicks? do you know about its history?
my TL is 2005 but only has 86000KM on it(approx 53K) with clean history but it averages 7.5 L/100KM (33MPG) highway and 9.5L/100KM (24MPG) (mostly city driving)

I think some figures would help then these guys can give you an idea of what you may have to do to boost your #s

Reality check...Honda/Acura J-series don't get what you'd think they should on gas. I had a Pilot, MDX, and an Odyssey. Granted all bigger and heavier than the TL, but SUCKY mileage. Not what I'd expect from a Honda. The reason for it? Bad ass power from this V6!

TSX? 30 mpg average is easy with a light foot. Of course, I usually get 24-26.

Assuming everything (namely the ECU and it's systems) is working correctly, total mileage won't become a factor in mpg until somewhere way north of 200,000 miles. Engines have a quick break-in and a sharp decline wear wise. In between break-in and the decline, it's all the same as far as power and mpg goes. Somewhere between 5,000mi and 300,000 should all get the same mileage or in other words, mpg does not constantly go down as the miles pile on.

We've been over this many times on this board. You can help city mileage with proper tire inflation, coasting and other techniques, and any other tricks but you're only changing it a little. Octane does have a fairly large influence on mpg though.

07 Acura TL-S here, I do a good mix of high way and street driving, mostly highway because I know it gives me better mileage. Im averaging around 24mpg highway, around 22-23 for city, using premium gas from shell, so far thats been the best! I got the car used with about 70k miles on it, any suggestions on getting it higher? I got a pretty light, and steady foot, drive around 75-80mph on the highway =P

I have a 05 TL-Aspec bought it used with 15K on it, It now has 32K just had to replace the rear brakes on it. But I decided that if I was going to do the rears I might aswell do the fronts too. Then the bug got me, so I also replaced the rotors. She now has drilled and slotted rotors and ceramic pads thats the frist mod I have done, I do mostly city driving and get around 22MPG. if I take her out for a run and let her go wild she jumps to 27MPG, I use shell V-Power to feed her. On a side note when should I try to clean the injectors and what should I use never heard of seafoam before Thanks

Unless you've gotten a batch of bad gas, no reason for injector cleaning and Seafoam before 100,000 miles.

'04 TL, 90K miles. I've gotten as high as 36 mpg on the highway and average 30 or so on the highway. My overall average of typical mix of driving 30 miles to work on the highway and around town has been 25 mpg overall since I got the car. The 36 mpg was a total extreme. I was curious to see what the car was capable of, so I filled up right next to the highway, jumped on (a secondary two-lane country road) and drove 3 straight hours at 55 to 60, which is about the average flow of traffic on this road and got the 36. I've gotten as high as 33 mpg on similar rides.

The ethanol that they mandate in gas loves to play games with the injectors. I've been through 3 fuel senders in my 760 because the ethanol was killing the ones designed for the older pumps, so I got the new US Spec 760 ones that can be used with the ethanol based fuels.

FYI Seafoam isn't the best fuel cleaner for the $$$ Redline's SC1 is a whole lot better. It contains double the active ingredients that seafoam has and works without the harmful detergents that can damage components.

Agreed 100%. I haven't seen ethanol kill injectors but I've seen it kill a ton of fuel pumps, senders, and many rubber items. I have no idea why seafoam is so popular around here when as you said there are many safer and better cleaners out there.

I just bought mine 2.5 hours away from where I live and I averaged about 28 - 29 mpg on the interstate I had my cruise set on 80. I think my overall average city/hwy mixed is going to be probably around 22-25 I am guessing but heck I think that's much better then my 06 Accord 4cyl 5AT where I was averaging 24 -26 city/hwy.

Accord: 166 hp 160 torque
