Premium gas only. The price difference from 87 to 91 isn't much. Your car also states to only use premium. Can't afford gas for the TL, should've purchased something else.

None of the above. I use 93 (Shell V-Powahh!) as it's the only "premium" grade we have in FL (we have 87/89/93).

because our Engine Compression Ratio is 11:1, we need 93 octane so that the fuel doesnt pre-detonate.

if you read the forums, earlier TL's were prone to knock, or pre-detonation in stock form.

what this means, is that 93 might not even be high enough.

IHC has monitored knock and found a mixture of 100 and 93 to make 96 octane to stop Knock.

Higher compression ratios produce more power. The more you compress the air/fuel mixture, however, the more likely it is to spontaneously burst into flame (before the spark plug ignites it). Higher-octane gasolines prevent this sort of early combustion. That is why high-performance cars generally need high-octane gasoline -- their engines are using higher compression ratios to get more power.

Therefore, using lower octane gas than what an engine is designed for leads to premature combustion and when sensors detect this premature combustion, it has to adjust to accommodate this lower octane in order to prevent knocking. Thus using fuel that wasnt designed for your engine is a) inefficient b) risky and c) stupid.

93 93 93 93 93 93..... 93... all day. It's not worth the "savings" to use regular.

The money you save isn't worth the MPG and power loss imo.

Costco 91 Premium- you'll save more money skimping on tires, following the MID for oil changes, verifying you're getting the lowest insurance rates, etc. than skimping on gas over the life time of the car. Lots of posters don't think twice about changing oil at 3K and are wasting both time and money on that idea- hope they're not all buying regular gas.

If it's that big of an expense, you'll need to drive less or buy a more efficient car. Skimping on gas is not an option for me.

But the other Eleventy-Billion gas threads make up the few months we haven't had one. On a weekly average basis kind of thing.

91 or 93 only. using 87 will give you less power and mess up your emissions.

93 only, although I'll admit I dabbled with some 91 when gas prices were higher

What does the manual say, it's 91 Octane or higher right? 93 can be hard to find sometimes.

I have tried 93 from every gas station known to man. I still knock. Stealership says it's the ethanol.

I think your dealership is high. Ethanol has a higher (R+M/2) octane rating than gasoline - 99.15 - it should not knock/pre-detonate from compression.

^This. Ethanol is a slight octane booster. Dealer is full of it.

I should have added: It's well known that TL-S's, in particular but not exclusively, knock. I Hate Cars did a lot of testing and measuring knock on his TL.

I (and many, many others) have gotten case numbers at the dealer for the problem. There's even a whole massive thread on it - Valve Chatter/Pinging/Knocking in 2007 TypeS

The problem with ethanol is it's stoich AF ratio is much richer than gasoline. The ECU has a target AF ratio for any given condition and this is checked via the 02 sensors. That target is based on gasoline's 14.7. With ethanol in the mix, the ECU is still shooting for a target based on gasoline when it should be shooting a just a little richer. The net result is a leaner mixture. The ECU is doing noting wrong, just what it was programmed to do. The additional octane of ethanol is taken advantage of by using lower octane gasoline to bring the mix back up to the common 87/89/91/93. Unfortunately ethanol mixed with gasoline gets you the same octane as the gasoline by itself. It would be great if they added ethanol to 87 and got 89 or ethanol to 93 and got 95 but they don't, they're too damn cheap. It's this wonderful system screwing people in every way imaginable.

I *think* stoich of E10 is 14.13 instead of 14.7 with gasoline, it should be easy to find with a google search. It gets worse with E15. If the stoich target is off, the PE is off which is a greater effect and everything else is off. Most cars base PE tables off of the stoich or target AF. Lack of fuel in PE mode shows up as surging, pinging, and a lack of power. This is not insignificant, especially with E15. Add the fact that ethanol does not have the same btu content on top of no additional octane for E10/15 and you're screwed in every department whether it's power or mpg. It's a lose-lose for the consumer. A few small groups benefit from our loss.
