Fuel Tank Capacity???
Fuel Tank Capacity???
I just recently purchased a 2008 TL AT w/ Navi. Beautiful car and I'm loving driving it. According to the car's specs, it has a 17.1 gallon fuel tank. Has anyone ever even come close to putting 17 gallons in their tank? By the time my low fuel warning light comes on, my fuel range in miles is about 30-40. Today I drove over 20 miles after my fuel range read zero. I still only put 15 gallons in it when I filled up. Is this typical? If so, it seems like there' quite a reserve of gas in the tank (2-3 gallons) when the fuel range on the car reads zero. Just curious if this is the norm....
ive always pondered this myself. i have never been able to squeeze i 17 gallons...but now its for two reasons...1.) b/c it never needs that much and 2.) I'm not buying 17 gallons of gas in one sitting...fuck that

Bottom line, light comes on 35-45 miles to go. At zero miles, you still have 2-3 gallons in the tank.

assuming same as gen2- there is total fuel of 17.3 in the tank
of which you can get 16.8 out of it- based on latest `most gas reported on fillup` in gen2
I have done 16.7 and it was way below the line for E
The low fuel warning comes on at 3 gallons remaining, giving you about 50 miles in which to find your brand,, or any gas station.
If you reset a trip meter when the light comes on you will know how far is ok to stretch it.
Running F/I cars out of gas is bad for the system- fuel pump needs fuel to lubricate itself

I think it has more to do with cooling the fuel pump. The pump is submerged in fuel to keep it cool and quiet the pump. Driving around super low on gas is also said to be bad as the pump is only partly submerged too.
look in your owner book for capacity

click year then model- use Index page for anything you want
The fuel pump is not `partially submerged` at low fuel levels!!
to me- cooling and lubrication of the pump is the same thing - for purposes of discussion on why not to run out of gas

you also have to consider that gas expands and contracts depending on temperature so i'm sure our cars have a safety limit on how much you can put in (why you can never put in the whole 17 gal), leaving enough room in the gas tank for expansion...
