So the owner's manual says 17 gal.

I've never been able to pump more than 14 gal into it. Last week I ran it for 45 miles with the low fuel light on. Computer said 0 miles to empty...barely squeezed 14 gallons into it.

Short of pulling a Kramer, how do I figure out what the real capacity of the tank is?

 

The owner's manual is correct. Once the MID gets to 0, you still have 3 gallons in the tank. If you do a search or even look in the 3G Garage, there are tons of threads on this topic.

The lowest I have had it was 5 miles to empty and I hated the idea of having the fuel that low.

 

It's 17.1 gallons. When the low fuel light comes on, you have around 3 gallons remaining in your tank.

I have an '04 manual and an '05 automatic.

 

It's actually 17.09 gallons. I'm glad we have the safety feature so we don't run out of gas on the road.
