Front windows tint removal

Got a fix-it ticket to remove front windows tint. First time in nearly 5 years that they got me :thumbsdow Since one of my tinted windows had tint all scratched up, i was planning to remove it anyway. I definitely do not want to take it to a shop since this seems easy enough to do myself.

I am guessing I don't have to take the whole tint off, couple millimeters above where to door frame starts should be fine. Got any tips and how to easily remove the tint?

Thanks in advance

i've had to get tints removed at least 3 times on my old camry. anyhow, i watched them take it off a while ago and i saw them carefully use a razor at about a 35 degree angle downwards in a corner just to get enough started so then they just slowly peel the rest off. but, i would think that if you agree to buy the tints from any tinting place that they would take off the old ones at no charge.

good luck!

I'm confused, after market tint film can simply be peeled off. The longer it has been on the car the more resistance there will be but I have done it on 2 year old tint and it came off with no problems.

Ive removed window tint twice before and the actual film is easy to take off.. removing the adhesive is the biggest problem and time consuming!! It's taken me almost 2 hrs each time getting all the adhesive off the windows. A tint shop charges around $25 a window. Good Luck!

I was flagged during a safety inspection and needed to take it off. I got paranoid over all the complaints of wind noise so I asked for advice and ended up taking it to a tint shop recommended by my local dealer where they send their work. They used a razor and soapy water.. no windex / ammonia or heat gun. Took them 5 mins each window on the front.. no panel removal. I had them retint to the lowest legal limit up front while mainting 5% on the rears. $60 with lifetime warranty.

So just a spray bottle with soapy water and a new razor.. real easy. Start up top at the outside corner and work your way across and down.. the tint below the panel will pull up from a little moisture and pressure.

If you want to take it off without the adhesive stuck on your window, then you have to use steam!!!. warm up the tint/window with the steam. then pick a corner to start, blast it with the steam and slowly pull back the film. let the steam do the work, what i mean by that is let the steam slowly soften/melt the glue. just pull on the film lightly while steam blasting it. it should come off with no residue. if you are that unlucky then you'll have to use some "goo gone" to remove the glue after.

In california there is no such thing as "legal front tint"....it has to be only factory tint.

lol. can't do that with a fix it ticket.

I had to strip mine in front of a state trooper station because I thought I could get away with taking only 1 layer off. .....I didn't get away with it.

Supplies needed:
Several razor blades (preferably a blade holder handle too)
Invisible Glass Cleaner (the foam kind)
LOTS and LOTS of paper towels!
Patience.

Really, thats what some of us do here in CA too, either that or take the tint off and then re-tint.

Mine is a 35%
Interestingly, the cop used some kind of tint measuring device on the glass and it measured as 32% (probably the glass was a little dirty). He also said that the legal limit was 70% which kind of surprised me since i was not aware you can put any tint on front windows in CA. Anyone knows if the law changed recently to allow (minimal) tint on front windows?

Thanks for everyone's responses. I'll take a raiser to the car sometime over the weekend.
